CSR: How to better definite it and learn about it

During last week's Live Chat on Corporate Social Responsibility one of the issues raised was the definition of Corporate Social Responsiblity itself. Often people misinterpret corporate social responsibility as philanthropy - when corporations donate money or funding - when actually they are two different things.
A discussion was started on how we can better define CSR and how we can better educate ourselves about it. It would be great to continue that discussion here - What does social responsibility mean to you?
How can we reach a mutual understanding or definition of corporate social responsibility?
What do you know so far and what would you still like to learn about corporate social responsibility?

hi,
as a csr professional, i would admit that it is very difficult to define what csr is...in fact it is a practice and a process oriented phenomena that intends to generate 'responsible profit' therby enhancing the overall life conditions of the stakeholders..be it customers, communitty at large, environment, share holders etc.....it not is a negative task of eliminating the causes of discontent but the positive ones of creating contentment......it thus is a balancing act of people, profit and planet.

Most of the time people think that Corporate Responsibility is something that companies should practice on top of what they are doing. Such as: you might be irresponsible to your employees, you might be cheating on your tax declaration or you might be damaging the environment but if you throw some cash to an NGO, you are a responsible company.
This is very old-school thinking I would say. Corporate Responsibility is first of all doing your business in a responsible way.Companies should reduce the impact of their product, services, processes as much as possible
On top of that, you might want to be associated with a cause and contribute to a positive change but by doing this you should not fall away from your core area. You should be in your comfort zone if you want to add value to the cause you select. Food industry should look into opportunities around hunger issue before thinking about breast cancer for instance.
Yes, there is much to talk about but looking forward to hear other people as well.

Unfortunately, very few American corporations live up to their social responsibility. There are a few, but they are the exceptions.
Some of the worst ones are very aware of their image in the public eye, and they try to improve it by donating money to certain events and charities, etc. (which they write off on their taxes). And they produce television commercial ads that portray them as benificent and good. And, unfortunately, a lot of people buy it.
The truth, however, is that they put profit far ahead of public good, ahead of the environment, and ahead of the well being of most of their employees. They lobby Congress and bribe politicians to get what they want, which is to pay little or no taxes, and have free license to do whatever they want. Thus they are greedy and exploitive, and the real beneficiaries are their top executives who rake in tens of millions of dollars per year.
One day, however, the people will realize they can and should demand that corporations actually live up to their social responsibility, and actually serve the best interests of all people, the environment, and the world. That day will come, and I hope to God it won't be too much longer.

Just to add on this discussion.CSR is rapidly becoming a concept that cannot be ignored in the current century.Even tho it is left to the big corporations to come up with policies thats envisage the adoption of sustainability,I still feel that its every bodies duty to practice CSR right from his desk at the work place to the places we call home.CSR in a nut shell is to simply make decent profits while at the same time protect the environment and safeguard the rights of your workers.(3Ps PEOPLE PLANET PROFIT)
