Do you read?

Do you do a lot of leisure reading? Do you read books cover to cover? What kinds of books do you read? When surfing the Internet, are you more likely to look at text or images first? Will you spend a lot of time on a website that has few pictures?

No i don't...seriously i've severe concentration problem...the author had had to put tremendous effort in the opening two three pages to get me hooked.
But, it is not image i think that attracts me...its the powerful imagery of the writer or the picturesque explanation. For that i liked Jack London, Irving Stone, James Joyce...but again, I dare not to touch Joyce's Ulysses only for it's size. Or, Stone's Agony & the Ecstasy, which I started with great enthusiasm & left after 600 pages as didn't find the passion(the novel was started with) transcended till the end.
finally, a subject...with curt & lucid expression, devoid of verbosity interests me.

I do read quite a bit for leisure. Becuase the stuff I study in school is so serious, I like to escape from reality when I read. I like to read a lot of books that talk about pop culture and/or sports. I really like Nick Hornby, Douglas Coupland. Sometimes, if I have a little bit more time I will read something more depressing and non-fiction, like Shake Hands With the Devil or The World is Flat. I do read a ton of picture books, but thats becuase I have a three year old cousin, and I don't know if those count now that I have them memorized.

I'm definately along the starting lines of Nallison, being reading something less serious as the stuff in school is truly to focused. Also, I read tend to try and find books that I can either relate to or believe that I can pull something out of. No, I'm not saying that I haven't enjoyed the odd novel studied in English class but it doesn't mean that I still despise the amazing boring and dry books that are forced down our throats. In the three english courses that I took in my grade 12 year, in combination with my grade 11 English, I read approximately ten novels. Out of these, I enjoyed two. No, one in five isn't bad, but none the less it goes to show that even though the writers of this world work on a daily basis to produce layers or knowledge and continuously prove to have amazing skill, the school boards seemingly refuse to change any of the taught books to properly fit the new generations attention differences

All the time. During the school year mostly textbooks though. But in the summer, I'll read about a book a day. I read anything from books on neuropsychology to fantasy/romance novels. When I look at a website though, the first thing I read are the big words, not the pictures. I don't much like reading off the web though. For some reason my brain just doesn't take in material as well and I keep losing my place. Plus, I love the smell of books.

I sometimes read fantasy novels. But not very often these days.
I also try to read more non-fiction, but there's a few problems with that in my hometown in Belgium. Local libraries and book stores there have very little non-fiction, and what they have is usually pretty poor. Books that interest me are never to be found around there. Partly because many never got translated to Dutch (and for some reason they refuse to stock English books), partly because some as I was told: "don't fit this library's catholic image".
I'm currently in Finland to do a 3 month work training and yesterday went for the first time to the library there. It is just amazing. I am currently reading Wikinomics, but I already got half the library on my wish list I think

I agree with PoeticBurst, I never really liked the books we read in English class and I found them boring and dry. I think out of all the books that I read in high school I only really liked the Great Gatsby. I was also resentful that we has to scrutinize everything that the author wrote. How does anyone really know what the author meant and all the little symbols. Maybe he/she just thought the words sounded nice together. We'll never be able to find out what the author really meant as most of them are long dead. If I'm going to read fiction I'd rather enjoy it than have to think to hard about it.

I read a lot as there times that books have more than talking with other people (sometimes, and I know you know what I mean). Right now, I am going back to the Classic from Greek Mythology to the Victorian Period. For contemporary readings, I read the Latin Americans, the French intellectuals, the German philosophers, and the American Gothic. I have my own personal library at home although I must admit that I have not read them all.
I read internet articles and news. I read with or without images.

When i was younger (not that i'm old) i read as much as i could. I could read book or two a day (and i'm not talking about short stories and small books for children. At 9 years of age i read books of Jules Verne etc.
Now i dont have as much time, but i still love to read. When a book is interesting to me and if i have time i still can read it very fast, but usually i read when i have time and that's not much, but still Oh, and i always read a book from the beggining to the end
I usually read fiction books-novels, history books, fantasy books ... or sth for school about music.
I dont like to read a text on the internet, but when i read it i firstly look at the images. If it's a good text it doesnt have to have loads of any at all images. But it's still better to grab a good old book and read from it rather from a computer where your eyes get tired and sick of the light from the monitor :P
And, megsy and katea, i wish everybody could enjoy reading too, but as many as there are different types of ppl as many are the tastes, unfortunately-of fortunately otherwise we couldnt get the books we wanted to because every would read them

I read dozens of books a month...
When I view websites, I typically will glance at the pictures first... but that's just if I'm looking up stuff at my own leisure. If it's a research project, I scan through the information and ignore all of the pictures.

Ok, here is a *short* tale of my life:
When I was a little kid, I used to be picked on and bullied in school, so I hated being around other kids. My safe haven was the library. NO ONE ever spent any extra time in the library than they had to, so it was perfect. So I used to read, read read read. I would literally read a dozen books a day, cover to cover, in one sitting (or two!). I would go home and grab a pile of books (mommy dearest gladly paid for my reading addiction) and read all night. I wouldn't even turn on the television. I'd just read. Fast forward to 9th grade. My social life changed, ppl stopped picking on my and my social circle increased dramatically. My leisure reading decreased proportionately.
As of now, I rarely read just for the heck of it. I rarely read even for class when I have to. It's sad, and pathetic and I hate myself for it and make up a number of excuses for my bad reading habits as an adult. Sometimes though (rarely, I admit), I make it a point to grab a book, and just read, and I enjoy every second of it. I honestly wish I had more time for it, as that is one of the big reasons I stopped reading. So many deadlines that the fun just keeps being bumped.

I read a lot as a kid and when I was in high school; then after I entered college I didn't have much time left to read for leisure, since assignments, papers, tests, etc took up most of the time.
However, I'm going to try reading more again - I'll try to make the time for it because I absolutely love to read!
I do read books cover to cover and though I can read something that has no pictures in it, I just prefer to read an article or book that has a few pictures.
