Arab-Israeli wars

Gosh im shocked!

I dont know where to put this thread, cultural or peace and war or education.

But gosh im really shocked.

I just talked to Frances, Tig member in China asking her about an Chinese politician whom im interested in.

Then we asked her what she learnt about Vietnam in her history book. Frances said China history lesson taught them that Vietnam was initially apart of Chine and then separated from China since Ming Dynasty.

What i learnt in my history book is that Vietnam has never been part of China. And Ming Dynasty invaded Vietnam and China colonised Vietnam for 1000 years before our victory against them in 938 from which we became a free kingdom, but was still being exploited by more powerful China.

Sometimes ago, there was an intense argument between Japanese and Korean on the differences and contrast information about the world wat II in the history books.

This make me think that TIG is really a great place to exchange what kind of information we are crammed and access to difference sources of opinions.

One history curriculumm for youth all over the world? - thats impossible and not practical. But clearly, history information we learn at schools are different and sometimes even totally contrast. It explain the endless conflicts among people in Middle East,Sri Lanka, China and Tibet,Korea etc. People cant sit to dialogue because since they are kids, people have already been brainwashed with dates, number of death, events of the past that are interpreted in different tones and criticism based on particular intentions and views. And history lessons when taught are merely related to current situations.Adding to that, sometimes we are not critical enough to see different sides of the stories.

There go misconceptions. Stereotypes.Intolerence.

Ok to end my rambling, i think there should be a History forum on TIG.

Angel, I agree. I put in a suggestion to TIG about creating a history forum, a few months ago. They say that they are working on it.

Very nice suggestion. :-) I agree with this. From our end, there are also certain things that we can discuss.

I agree with all of you. But, i think that this forum has to rely on authentic historical sources, that may help verify our facts and information about the world.
On the other hand, i think that almost all world wars and disputes are a cause of distorting facts. In addition history had to be recorded neutrally, not glorifying or degrading any event.

Yeah, history is twisted everywhere.......but I'm not really willing to spend unnecessary time in arguing thing others won't accept...history is a very sensitive matter...

When the Afghan militants were fighting the Soviets, the US media portrayed them as the world's heroes, and after 9-11, they became the axis of evil!

Arab-Israeli wars

Discussing a topic like history, recalls me with an argument between me and another friend in a now-closed thread. He said that in the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the Egyptian forces "pushed into Israel", and were 30 miles from Tel-Aviv.

What I know is that the modern history witnessed four full-scale Arab-Israeli wars in 1948, 1956, 1967, and in 1973. There were other conflicts in 1968-1969, and in 1982. In 1948, I agree that the Egyptians were 18 kilometers southwest of Tel-Aviv in the beginnings of battles, then they retreated from the Negev Desert westwards inside Sinai peninsula.

In 1956, the Israelis took the Egyptian Sinai peninsula, and then were forced to retreat due to threats from the UN and the USSR.

In 1967, Israel took Sinai again from Egypt, and the two armies became separated by the Suez canal - separating the rest of Egypt from Sinai peninsula -. Sinai is a peninsula whose greatest east-west distance is about 400 kilometers, and north-south is about 600 kilometers. All kinds of maps I happened to see basically prove that the deepest ever position of the Egyptian army was 35 kilometers west of the Suez canal, covering the area in which the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) have built the famous Bar-Lev Defensive Line. The distance between the Egyptians' deepest penetration and the current borders between Egypt and Israel was at least 300 kilometers (Tel Aviv is further). Hence, I find it strange to say that the Egyptians pushed into Israel.

A map shows what I'm saying here:

History

The idea of a history board has my complete support.

I actually majored in the subject in University. I took European, Canadian and even one American History Course. I loved it all! (yes even the Canadian stuff)

The thing about Mideast history is that it is so divisive, I mean the city of Jerusalem as an example is one place to which all 3 major world religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism) can stake a claim.

Overall I've noticed one thing about History: The victors almost always write it.
