i have the same problems.
some things that have helped me...
compliment others. often they give compliments back which makes you feel more confident. the very act of compimenting helps some too. it gives a feeling of goodness in the world that makes one feel less judged and threatened.
when your heart says "do something", do it. it may be hard the first few times, but eventually it gets easier.
hang out with confident people who you admire. they will give you confidence and put you in situations where confidence pays off.
don't be afraid of looking foolish.everyone does at some point in their lives. it's best not to let it get the best of you.
enlist the help of friends. tell them what you are trying to work up the courage to do and they will give you tips and encourage you.
pretend you're confident.studies show this actually raises real confidence.
if all else fails, carry around a puppy, kitten or baby. people cant help but be drawn to little cute animals or babies and you will meet new people and be forced to talk to them. also, the attention will give you confidence. (don't use this for too long. just a day or two.)

go help someone else and then u feel good about yourselves.
basic things, help an old lady across the road, give a homeless man the sandwich your mother makes but you dont like.
very simple things, dont try to change the WHOLE world, or you will live a miserable life LOL

There's a lot of great suggestions, but personally I try not to use a solution that depends primarily on others because then if they don't come through for some reason then my feelings suffer. I used to be really shy and still do have anxiety issues so I'm always having to over come things like lack of self-confidence. What works for me is to challenge myself and sometimes bully myself even to go beyond my comfort level. Start off small and build up. By the time you get to the more difficult things the initial things that seemed impossible look like a piece of cake. That way if you fail, you're the only one aware of your personal set back and saves on the embarrassment and when you succeed you get a sense of personal satisfaction. Also, keep a mental log of why what you do or look like or say is important/good. That way when you start to doubt yourself you have something to fallback on.

all the way through primary and high school i had problems with self esteem, self confidence and it held me back tremendously.
how did i fix this? well slowly i made the decision to put my hand up for things, just small things, and gradually volunteered for bigger things.
the trick is if ur not confident is something, start off small and work from there.
Slowly your confidence grows in whatever your doing to the point that your self confidence is higher all round
its not an easy thing to overcome, but its far from impossible.
Megan.

I think to a certain extent I can relate to this. My biggest problem was my family members liked bringing me down every chance they get, saying all sorts of nasty things like how I will never amount to anything. suprisingly I have risen above all that coz I started believing in my self and loving my self unconditionally

hey guys in order to feel good about oursrlves we have to try and be the best of wat we are. people usually fail when they try and pretend on their characters ,abilities and at the end of the day self esteem is lowered. appreciate wat you are and you will never lose self esteem.

The problem that we have is that we try so hard to be things that we are not because we want to fit in, what we do not realise is we lose our selves in the process. We end up losing focus on the important things in life.
I always say, one can have all the material things there are to have but if they don`t have hearta or souls they`re just as empty.
To feel good about your self does not mean you need to bring other people down
Mawethu.
