Are leaders born or made?
February 12, 2008 - 09:54 AM

Leadership capability is a skill we don't all have, but it has been observed that some people inherently possess the ability to persuade others to follow their lead. While many havard MBA graduates, for instance, may not turn out to be good leaders, there is a belief that some leaders are the product of some form of formal leadership training. So, are leaders born or made or simply an interaction of both?

leaders are both born and made.Noone can eversay leaders are either only born or made.
I leader who is born is the one who realises his potentials on his own.He realise that he must lead because he comes to know that he has what it takes to lead a group. Those who are made are those who are nade to know later in life that they contain leadership skills which are need and therefore are to put them on the ground and use them.
i therefore conclude that everyone is aleader, born or made. The only difference is that oters realise theirs late.

leadership is about influence, which i think is an in borh thing.you can not be taught to influence others. what training does is it enhance you leadership style, skill and not necessarily imput leadership.remember leadership and management are two different things one can be a manager but not necessarily a leader. So i believe leadership is is an inborn thing

Leadership is many things and one thing. It is listening, accepting, consenting but also imparting, initiating, telling.

There are no singular characteristics or treats typical to all great leaders of past and present. However, there are some treats observed in parallel in many successful leaders such as passion, courage, defiance of status quo. In one word, leaders are neither born nor made. They are cultivated and nurtured via conscious trainings or unconscious struggle to keep up with unexpected emergence of events.

P.S. This thread is being moved to the Culture and Identity board where it belongs..

Not everyone is a leader, some are happier to follow.
Some leaders are born to be just that, they have the self confidence, the determination and the focus to lead peers, whether by example or persuasion.
However, people can learn to being leaders, having the skill to look after though who need it and learn to take charge when it is neccessary.

A leader is someone that at any point can make a decision and people are willing to follow it. Something as small as being the first to volunteer for something, or as large as commanding a country, a leader is someone that the followers make, but they have to take on the challenge.

I think leaders are mainly born so, like a personality trait. However, I do believe that others can be instigated into a strong leadership position depending upon the issue or circumstances. There are some who are charismatic that can lead and there are some that contain a sort of "internal fire" that sparks fellowship. Leadership is a complex entity involves so many components of group dynamics that the making of leaders is true to some extent on any level but I think there are thoses who have an intuitive knowledge as well. Plus, there's factors like being educated in a subject. People who are more knowledgable about something may automatically be put in a leadership position without necessarily seeking it. The real question is whether or not being a natural born leader necessarily makes you a good leader?
