Solar-powered CD players for Darfur refugees
February 10, 2008 - 10:32 AM

The Book Wish Foundation is asking for suggestions about solar-powered CD players and related technologies to send to three Darfur refugee camps in eastern Chad, to allow the refugees to listen to the audio component of an English-language course. The refugees view learning English as a "road to freedom," and greatly need to improve their English proficiency to have a chance to study at university.
Details here.

Interesting idea. For some reason, this reminds me of the solar powered flashlight...just a thought.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. We are still looking to find the best deal on solar audio technology. There is an MP3 player available for about $20, but only if we order at least 3,000, which is way more than we need (or can afford). Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, Oxford University Press has given us a great discount on the English course material, and we are getting ready to make our first shipment of a few hundred books to the refugee camps.

Personally, it is a good idea for those in that region. But, we have to know that cd players are not important necessities for those deprived of the chance to eat. where is the pleasure of listening to music when u are on empty stomach?
Please, I do not intend to criticize the idea but the issues of life sustenance are important, much more important than a CD player. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kizy: the CD players are not to listen to music, but to listen to the audio component of an English course, published by Oxford University Press. The refugees view learning English as a "road to freedom," and have shown incredible dedication to their studies. If you have ever tried to learn a foreign language, you know how important it is to hear it spoken, but the refugees have very few chances to interact with native English speakers.
Our first shipment of books from the course just arrived in the Bredjing Refugee Camp. We are still looking for the right technical solution to enable the students to listen to the audio part of the course.
