What I would tell UN?

Look around at the mess we are making. Stop bickering over who said what and who didn't do what and do something now!

Emerging super-powers like China and India definitely need to have more severe cut-backs and included in the Kyoto Protocol.
Maybe that would stop Americans screaming: We're not ratifying cuz the other's ain't doing it. wink

What would I tell the United Nations General Assembly about the youth and Climate change?nerdy
I would talk about Carbon trading. I would say that even though this is a good step towards managing the global carbon dioxide content, it is not to be looked at as the solution to the problem.
What the United Nations should push for in the long term is the real reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by countries, irrespective the funding contributed by that country to the UN.
I would say that the youth have energy and the talent to invest in the problem of climate change and the only thing they require is the correct forum, to put all their ideas together, Forums such as this.
I would also urge the youth to Make this issue of Climate change as real to them as the air they breath and to try tackle it using their varrious professions and talents.[quote]
Finally, I would tellt he United Nations General Assembly that the youth are the policy makers and that the world is looking at them, Willing them to be the change they want to see in the world.wink

Though it's true that during US's industrial revolution climate change wasn't a priority. But that doesn't mean we should let the east end up in a position like North America. Maybe it's not fair to restrict their growth but then again nothing's fair. And also, if Indian and China start to consume/produce like the US then they'll run into problem sooner than later due to the oil peaking.

I agree that China should be pressurized into cutting down their emissions - it would help their citizens too - even though they may not be yet considered "developed". It's all of our responsibility to help with the climate crisis.

I think the UN should be working together with all the countries on climate change and also raising awareness about it. Because it's true - the developing countries don't know much about it and some don't care because all they can see right now is their growth which really is just short term.

Also, I think not only youth in high school and universities should be educated but also kids should be educated from elementary school and should be taught how to be green from the begining so that it becomes a habit and we would have a greater impact on the climate when everone is working towards it together.

I'm very excited to see lots of comments being posted here. For your comments I can learn alot.

What would you tell the UN?

I would tell the UN to create Global Youth Organizations (GYO) which is part of UN like other existing organizations such as WTO, WB and so on. All the UN members countries should send their youth delegates to work for the GYO and those delegates should be changed every year or every two years. The delegates should work for the benefit of youth from around the world and they should have voices in the UN. The GYO should held meeting and conferences to discuss what youth can do to help to solve global issues such as climate change. Each country should have youth council which is chaired by the youth delegate who is sent to GYO. The youth delegate should be elected by youth members within their country. Each country should sponsor youth council and GYO.

Before any effective international legislation, UN must have to facilitate and empowered by member countries as a binding body. Its failure in Iraq war and most recently, the Georgian crisis, emphasis this lacuna. But at present level of functionality, we certainly can expect UN as advocacy role. In combating certain diseases UN has remarkably served the humanity. However, the issue of climate change is not so simple, It needs multilevel action and several related functions. Resource use par capita, emission per capita and justice to developing countries are most imported issues I think.

Well ,first of all we should focus in educating the youth by showing them how climate change is affecting them now as opposed to say in 50 years.
2nd, the main agenda, especially in developing countries id to improve the standards of living. Anyone who has tried educating someone who lives on less than a dollar a day on why they should save the environment will get what am saying. When you are poor all you care about is survival at all costs. And unfortunately, this cost is usually the environment.
lastly because we all can, take small steps too conserve energy whenever you get the chance.

About putting nuclear plants in developing nations, there is one problem with that: the developed countries (particularly the U.S) will feel threatened by the fact that developing countries now have the tools to make nuclear bombs.
I think developing nations are far from nuclear plants. As well, the image of a nuclear plant isn't a safe and clean source of energy in most of those countries.
However, there's a big problem with our current plants: the waste. We are using the process of fission to produce energy, which is wasteful and dangerous.
The only true and green way is to use fusion. Unfortunately, research into fusion is not being funded well and I think it's more important that we change that than start spreading the current way of energy production around the world. That way, we will be talking about the harmfulness of nuclear plants (as opposed to coal) in a few years. :/

the youth are a representation of the future.our involvement in major decisions affecting the environment(our future)would be greatly invaluable.creating a committee for youth for a green environment with a global outreach would be a good start.the use of conferences and workshops on how to live in a healthy environment especially in developing countries would be a blessing.ignorance is one of the major reasons why pollution is more widespread.this conferences would eliminate ignorance.

I would like the UN to use young people to help in saving the enviloment.

i.e The UN can employ youth to plant trees. If they buy seedlings and get labour from youth. We can save our forests.

Re: Climate Change and Youth: What would YOU tell the UN?

I would tell the UN to continue pursuing global leaders to join the climate change mission and at the same time to start employing people from communities to make the problem known at the grassroots level. People themselves need to change and only then will countries and eventually the world change.
The key is to solving the problem is the youth of today. People who in ten or twenty years time will be major part of the world's economy and infrastructure. Only then can the effort to stop climate change be carried out in a proper and efficient way.
There are many ways in which the youth could be empowered. It would be a good idea to host training courses that will inform concerned and active young leaders about the new discoveries and possible solutions to the problem of climate change.
The spread of the war against anthropogenic climate change should be such that the people of countries like the USA and not the UN will force the government to take up green policies and strict measures to ensure a peaceful future.
