Consumerism
February 5, 2008 - 11:11 AM

Suppose an advertiser wants to promote their product to people like you and your friends. What kinds of things could they do to get you and your friends to buy their product (e.g., let you beta test a game, use real people like you in their ads, etc.)?

Do you pay attention to interactive ads (e.g., online banners where you "play to win a plasma TV" or TV commercials that say "text to win"wink? Why or why not? What makes a good interactive ad?

How do you usually hear about new products? Which sources do you trust the most and why? Do you research products before buying them? How?

If people you know recommend a product to you, how are you most likely to get these recommendations (e.g., in-person, verbally, through text, Internet links forwarded to you)? Can you give an example of a time when you got a personal recommendation? Did you actually end up buying the product?

When the product actually makes sense to me. Like, XDA or laptops, whatever their advertisement is I will still look forward to buying them because they've become a necessity.

I like advertisements that are also has social/environmental consciousness in it.

good taglines are also an advantage because it makes you remember.

I have never beta tested a product, so I can't say what effect it would have on my buying. However, I do know that TV ads do not work for me at all. Not for anything. I think it's pretty little videos and more of an entertainment thing than something that would actually make me buy a product. I nearly completely ignore flashing banner ads as I find them extremely annoying. I tend to pay attention to the social ones though, just to see if it is worth the time. I never text to enter anything as it doesn't appeal to me.

What really really works for me is research and word of mouth. The only time I participated in a "do something to win" was when someone LINKED me to a review, and in the bottom of the review was a question, and the best answers would get a prize. Oddly enough, I won! big grin However, that didn't turn me into a competition maniac.

My main purchasing interest is in electronic gadgets, so I constantly go to buy.com, circuitcity.com and bestbuy.com to see what is being offered there, as well as going to a bunch of different online tech review blogs to see what is coming out. I then research it, research it a little more, go to the manufacturer's website, do some price comparison and some gadget comparison, and see if it is worth my while. I also nearly always check out stuff that my friends tell me to, although emails and links and texts work better than verbal comments because i am so dependent on a visual aid.

However, it mostly goes to a wishlist instead of turning into an actual purchase because I am really stingy. smile
