BAGHDAD - Two mentally retarded women strapped with remote-control explosives — and possibly used as unwitting suicide bombers — brought carnage Friday to two pet bazaars, killing up to 99 people (updated death toll) in the deadliest day since Washington flooded the capital with extra troops last spring.
The coordinated blasts — coming 20 minutes apart in different parts of the city — appeared to reinforce U.S. claims al-Qaida in Iraq may be increasingly desperate and running short of able-bodied men willing or available for such missions.
But they also served as a reminder that Iraqi insurgents are constantly shifting their strategies in attempts to unravel recent security gains around the country. Women have been used in ever greater frequency in suicide attacks.
The twin attacks at the pet markets, however, could mark a disturbing use of unknowing agents of death.
Brig. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, Iraq's chief military spokesman in Baghdad, said the women had Down syndrome and may not have known they were on suicide missions. He said the bombs were detonated by remote control.
In Washington, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the bombings prove al-Qaida is "the most brutal and bankrupt of movements" and will strengthen Iraqi resolve to reject terrorism.
The U.S. military in Iraqi issued a statement that shared "the outrage of the Iraqi people, and we condemn the brutal enemy responsible for these attacks, which bear the hallmarks of being carried out by al-Qaida in Iraq."
The U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, said the bombings showed that a resilient al-Qaida has "found a different, deadly way" to try to destabilize Iraq.
Associated Press records show that since the start of the war at least 151 people have been killed in at least 17 attacks or attempted attacks by female suicide bombers, including Friday's bombings.
The most recent previous attack was Jan. 16 when a female suicide bomber detonated her explosives among men preparing for the Ashoura holiday in a Shiite village in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad.
While involving women in such deadly activity violates cultural taboos in Iraq, the U.S. military has warned that al-Qaida is recruiting women and young people as suicide attackers because militants are increasingly desperate to thwart stepped-up security measures.
Women in Iraq often wear abayas, the black Islamic robe, and avoid thorough searches at checkpoints because men are not allowed to touch them and there are too few female police.

It is low. Be noted though that this is a crime of twisted individuals who uses religion as a tool, not a crime by true Muslims.

I think there’s a danger in simply dismissing this as “not a crime by true Muslims.” Those who commit these mass murders and those who are enablers and perpetrators do, in fact, claim their religious perspectives as their motive. It’s they who would contend that their actions are in accord with their religious beliefs.
Look around you; with virtual exclusivity, it’s the religious folks who are suicide car bombers, airline hijackers, street market mass murderers, etc., etc. And yes, there are instances of lone gunmen who commit acts of murder but those acts are not committed as the result of religious ideologies. Please show me news reports of the last time an Atheist detonated a bomb in a public place or crashed a commercial airliner into a mega building or drove a car bomb into a busy street to convert you or in furtherance of his “belief”?
I have every reason to believe that you find acts of mass murder to be appalling but it’s important to understand that these acts are predicated on religious tenets. So why place limits on others as not being “true Moslems”. It’s an unnecessarily limiting factor, particularly when there is a clearly enunciated phrase of choice that appeals to a religious entity when these acts are committed. Some would argue that this is a contradictory position to take; that invoking the name of a deity in furtherance of a mass murder is blinkered thinking. But I have yet to see a convincing argument as to how not allowing for religious perspectives in the commission of mass murder really advances our understanding of it. Without a plausible framework to show us why we are not to believe that a suicide bomber is not a “real Moslem” acting in furtherance of his/her religious belief, or to understand the motivations that he/she used, we’ll both be on this site tomorrow afternoon discussing that mornings hateful little murder/suicide fleshbot who also wasn’t a “true Moslem”… but splodid’ a few dozen men, women and children because wearing a burqa with brown shoes offends someone’s dress sense.

I do not agree with the term “USED”
Women “used” for suicide attacks, because there are 100’s of men doing it too, so are they all mentally retarded? I think they are not all retarded mentally, a change which is called “INQelab” in East, is only possible through shedding blood , no matter your own or your enemies, some people are actually mad to bring that kind of change, that is why they use “Fair” and “Unfair” means and I think a suicide is an unfair way of bringing that change, before only men used this unfair mean now women are using this mean too…
I think the expressions of media are not 100% acceptable, because you know ……… this reason and that reason ………………………………………………………..

al-kafir, correct me if i'm wrong, but weren't most of the kids responsible for the last major school shootings athiest? they may not have used bombs, but they did kill innocent people. religion is not the reason for the world's evils, it is those who turn hate into a religion who are responsible. every person is capable of evil. religion isn't responsible. the people responsible hide behind it and give it a bad name.
