Re: US politics and the world

I've finally decided what I want: I just want to see a Democrat in the House, be it Clinon or Obama. I actually preferred Obama in the beginning, but then there are speculations about maybe he won't keep his promise of taking out the troops from Iraq...so that's a big blotch on his campaign, and then there was Samantha Powers's monster controversy, but I don't fully support Senator Clinton either, seeing as how she was one of the Senators who signed the bill for the war to start in the first place.

prieten47 ,
i said i don't know how [i]some[i] of the political process works. no one has ever explained to me well how the electorial college works. do you know? how in 2000 did Bush win when he had fewer votes? aren't presidents picked "by the people?" that's what i don't understand. they make it sound simple in school--pick a canidate and if they get the most votes that candidate wins, but 2000 proved that's not always true. why? what is there in the political process that i don't know? seems like my education should have covered it.

Hi Jenny -
The short answer to what the electoral college is:
Every state has a number of electoral votes - this is determined by population in each state - the more people who have in each state, the more electoral votes it has.
So when you are voting in the general election, you are voting for the president, but technically you are voting for an elector who pledges to vote for the presidential candidate. So whichever candidate wins the state, s/he gets all of the pledged electoral votes.
In theory, this means the president who wins the popular should normally win the electoral college - but in practice (as in 2000), there are ways where this doesn't happen. If a candidate wins most of the most populous states (California, New York, Florida etc), then you have a high probability of winning the most electoral votes. But if candidates split these states - you split the electoral votes, and then magic math comes into play.
Read the wikipedia article here on the US electoral college for more details - including instances where electors choose to vote for someone else in the electoral college.
Hope that helps!

I definately agree. This years election is very fascinating and its even more interesting to see how non-Americans are so closely following it. Even i am just so closely following it and just changing who am supporting.
I cant vote anyway ao i have that right to change.
Either way whoever wins on the democrats side is definately going to be record setting cuz its either a Black man or a Woman. Its funny how America suppposed to be a super power really doesnt yet have a woman in presidency. Clinton did fake with her crying and everything and Obama really does promise too much change. Just like in Ghana and the promise of Positive Change and i wonder what happened to that in the past 8 years.
Whoever wins will definately affect the lives of everyone so we are all just sitting tight and waiting.

Deep End Zone, thanks for the help. i still don't like the fact that a person can win the popular vote and still lose an election. oh well, i guess.

"If you start to think about it is crazy that a country that states it is so forward thinking has yet to have Female President!"
I see the point you are trying to make, however, it looses its intelectual honesty when you pick on the fact that a woman has never been president. By the same token, we have never had a open homosexual, or a Morman as president. Does that hinder our foward thinking? We've never had a Latino or Asian president. Never in our history has a broom or couch been our president. Does this make the U.S. backwards in it's thinking?
In the Great Country of Canada, when has a black man been the Prime Minister? Does that make Canada NOT foward thinking? Btw, Obama is not African American...he is inter-racial.
I don't say this to be mean, but to shed some honesty to your pointed arguement. if we develople the equation that mostly Arabs commits acts of terror, therefore, all Arabs are terrorist...that is dishonest.
Ohhhhhhhh...Canada! (okay, that time i did take a jab ) eh?

"Anyhow, I could care less about the Republicans. =P"
I find this statement interesting. Those on here who claim to be so open-minded and tolerant. I personally have no love for the republican party, and I absolutey destest this far left version of the late, great democratic party.
However, if you are truely interested in the American election process, then you also have a vested interest in the Republican party. One can't go with out the other if you are truely and intellectually honest about your interest. However, i find time trued and again, that those who claim to be open minded and tollerant are the least of either of those concepts.

"The presidential race in the US is closely followed by almost everyone around the world, because US after all is the world's oldest democracy."
Actually we are a Republic. WE are not a democracy!
As far as the world watching us and our election process, well why wouldn't they. I don't mean that in arrogance, but like the world watch Rome in it's day. This is why we are both loved and hated.

"It makes me sad, as a US citizen, to see the image our leaders cause us around the world."
I know what you mean! Jimmy Carter meeting with the leaders of Hamas. Al Gore and is propaganada on global warming. oh wait...i bet you were pointing that at GWB.
What makes me sad is when Americans use a medium, like lets say the internet, and their freedom of speech to talk about how terrible AMerican is. Maybe you should check out Iran. In all my reading of post on here i find very few people who say their country is from the middle east....or china. We all know the muslim world adores and respects the rights of women right? Before you disparage the U.S. to much or beceome an apologist for Her, maybe you should consider the blessings you have that others in the world would give their left nut for.

"I wouldn't say they really disrupt the US reputation. But it's funny, how US being oldest democracy is yet to have a Female President.
What is it, then? Just male dominance in the society which is called the most modern and all that?"
Maybe...i mean who let her out of the kitchen and put shoes on her feet anyway? Or...is Hillary the first viable female that weve had as a contender for that office. I wholeheartedly and vehemently disagree with her, however, i respect that she is the first woman in our history to actually display the ability to be our president.
Life is a real female dog, when the will of the people is exercised. darn constitution! a cumbersome document to get around.
Im being sarcastic of course, but wake up! We either choose what is politically correct or what gives everyone a mental, feel-good orgasm, or we pick the leaders who are best to lead us.

"I know this analysis is a bit cynical. But I thought that newspaper article was really enlightening. "
Not at all! I find it amazing to see the democrates true colors come out. Even though ive been shouting it from the mountain tops since 2000.
Admittedly I am laughing a little to see the racist, chauvenist, and bigoted, inherent ideology come to light.
All these years of hearing and seeing the champions of equality blister their vitriol on conservatives, the true champions of humanity.
The hillary/obama race has shown who these people are!

"A long time feminist?? Hillary Clinton?? a woman who has been riding the coattail of a husband who has been cheating on her over and over and over again?? thats like telling american women its ok to be a victim as long as it gets up somewhat ahead !!
This nomination race shows that the US is still divided on racial and gender lines as well as class; little old white ladies for HillBilly, blacks for Obama, old Hispanics and asians with Stockholm syndrome, and the Y generation with some hope and optimism for once
I dopnt think i can add a single word to this. Nice job and almost genius!!!
