US politics and the world
January 28, 2008 - 02:00 PM

On November 4th, 2008 Americans will be choosing their new President, an individual who is typically a middle-aged Caucasian male. Although I am a Canadian citizen I often find myself fascinated by US elections- perhaps because a large portion of Canadians live 45 minutes from the US border (Crazy that with the amount of land we have most of us live in such a condensed area, but that's another topic!). However, I wanted to know if I am not alone in my US political fascination (I even gone as far as publicly showing my support on another social networking site for a candidate I cannot even vote for). Do any of you find US politics interesting or do you find they affect you in your countries?

I also think this election is particularly interesting, at least from my point of view, because of the diversity of the candidates. Two of the leads for the Democratic Party are not your typical candidate- one being a woman and the other an African American man. If you start to think about it is crazy that a country that states it is so forward thinking has yet to have Female President!

Thanks for starting this thread! I definitely look forward to reading what the community has to say.

Check out Wikipedia's list of female heads of state and heads of government:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_heads_of_state
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Female_heads_of_government

I think the United States is in a unique position, in that its political process is scrutinized by practically everybody in the world. What happens within their borders definitely has repercussions for eveyone, not only Canadians.

I will say that I think too much attention is placed on the primary process - when the candidates are selected, whoever they may be, will make for a very interesting 2008!

Oh and let us not forget on the Republican side, the question is:

1) Is America ready for a Mormon President?

Mitt Romney could very well win the nomination.

You may say Romney might win, but he sflip-flopping more than Kerry did, which will kill his nomination.

I agree.

He's got the pedigree, the personal fortune and the presidential look but he seems to lack the personal integrity and conviction in his own beliefs.

Anyhow, I could care less about the Republicans. =P

On the Democrats, I'm predicting an Obama/Richardson ticket for '08 and that it'll win the White House!

Let me throw this question out there: Who would you want to be the next President of the United States and why?

I would have to agree that there is something fascinating and captivating with US politics and its system more so then in other countries - including my own in Canada. I find the US system of check and balances (or at times the notions of itstick out tongue) intriguing as well - along with how candidates are chosen. It is a process that takes well over a year and an absurd amount of money (an estimated 1 billion, yes b as in billion, by November of this year! Yikes) and can certainly suck you in when there are 'non status quo/non traditional' candidates like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Either way, assuming the Democrats do not majorly screw up, they will win the elections and the world's powerful nation will be either led by a woman or a black man and I for one am looking forward to that day. If there is one positive thing (and I mean the only ONE)the last 8 years of Bush government has given the American people - and the world for that matter - is a deep desire for some much needed change from the standard rich-white guy approach and that in it of its self is probably what captivates me and millions of Non-Americans around the world so much into following these 2008 elections.

i think US is now going to have its first black president in Obama. I used to have my own reservations about the man but it seems like he is taking the democrat nomination from Clinton. if Clinton is to win again it will be history 1st female president.I say lets wait and find out.But unfortunately whoever is in power does not matter their policies especially the foreign policy remain the same. the so called war on terror will continue to protect US interest. Little Zimbabwe Will remain as Rice puts it "a threat to US policy."So i really dont mind anyone can be the president but they should also change their system.

Yeah, even I am supporting a candidate I can't even vote for. The US elections definitely are very important atleast for my country. The presidential race in the US is closely followed by almost everyone around the world, because US after all is the world's oldest democracy.

It makes me sad, as a US citizen, to see the image our leaders cause us around the world. They say "national interest or national security" but they are killing our reputationsad Hopefully the citizens of all teh countries around the world know that the majority of American people do not think the way the government does...

I wouldn't say they really disrupt the US reputation. But it's funny, how US being oldest democracy is yet to have a Female President.
What is it, then? Just male dominance in the society which is called the most modern and all that?

what bothers me is that parts of our election process are complicated and have never been explained well to me or many other voters. i'm still trying to grasp how the electorial college works and what exactly the primaries do. can any Canadians help me out? (just kidding. anyone can explain it to me that knows. Canadians just always seem to have a far better knowledge of American politics than most Americans.) stick out tongue

Really, Jenny, you don't know how the US election system works? I can't believe that!

I've recently read an interesting Washington Post article on the Obama/Clinton primary elections. Obama seems to be winning because he is further to the left politically than Hillary. His supporters are males, African-americans and he has managed to lure many higher income women away from Clinton. Clinton's supporters are largely women of the mid to lower incomes.

Hillary Clinton's plan was to depend on a big women's vote to carry her to the Democratic nomination. Unfortunately for her, the younger well-educated "post-feminist" and rich "Kennedy-style" women have bolted her campaign and have voted for Obama.

What have we learned about the Democratic Party voters? The men will vote for anyone but a woman; the African-americans will ditch any White poltician, even ones who have fought hard for Black empowerment, if there is a chance to vote for an A-A; and women, well women are fickle. They will ditch a longtime feminist woman for any good-looking young man that comes along.

I know this analysis is a bit cynical. But I thought that newspaper article was really enlightening.

A long time feminist?? Hillary Clinton?? a woman who has been riding the coattail of a husband who has been cheating on her over and over and over again?? thats like telling american women its ok to be a victim as long as it gets up somewhat ahead !!

This nomination race shows that the US is still divided on racial and gender lines as well as class; little old white ladies for HillBilly, blacks for Obama, old Hispanics and asians with Stockholm syndrome, and the Y generation with some hope and optimism for once

I agree, this year's election is sure something to watch, then again, when havn't the US been a spectacle on the political scene?

I'm just sitting here waiting for it all to play out. I will say that I'm pretty happy about the minorities being represented in this years running, at the same time

I'm not overly confident that either of them will win but I do know they are making lots of headlines and raising awareness on many critical human right's issues which need to be addressed.

With regards to this year's election, Obama's my man , really pulling for him. I just don't see the genuineness there from Clinton after the fake crying scene, the riding the coattails of her husband thing, she makes her point, but I'm just not convinced.
