Input on my project in Honduras?
January 27, 2008 - 04:40 PM

(at the bottom I ask for feedback)

Honduras is the second poorest nation in Central America and one of the poorest in the world. In rural communities especially, social exclusion and the unequal distribution of benefits is blatant. Many of Honduras’ rural citizens are without electricity, running water, and sanitation, and most live without the tools of the 21st century, technology and computing skills and internet access. These citizens are disempowered and excluded, fueling the cycle of political corruption rampant in Honduras and enabling the government organizations, such as those in charge of providing electricity and running water to rural communities, to only take and not to give.

The project I propose is a to start a teen workshop at the local Riecken Foundation library, brainstorm and research community-relevant information on the political process and citizens' rights, instruct in digital video, and turn the information into a student-made movie for the benefit of the community. Students involved will be empowered and socially included by learning media technology, internet research, and project completion skills. They will have the opportunity to teach the community their rights and political tactics, empowering community members to demand accountability from government officials and organizations. The video will teach the community how to come together and organize.

The social outcomes of this project are young Hondurans who can film, edit, research, share their ideas, speak publicly to peers, and develop and complete a project, and a community who is knowledgeable in citizens’ rights and political information that is directly applicable to their specific needs. My project strengthens community bonds and creates leaders.

What do you think?
Have you done something similar?
Am I missing something?
What would you do differently?
Do you have any advice?
Can you think of a way I could get dedication from the students? (How can I reward their hard work?)

I'm new to the ICT inclusion scene and would love any feedback.

Thank you!
