Israel tries to combat Arab Holocaust denial with new website
January 24, 2008 - 01:49 PM

JERUSALEM - Israel's Holocaust memorial launched an Arabic version of its Web site Thursday, including vivid photos of Nazi atrocities and video of survivors' testimony, to combat Holocaust denial in the Arab and Muslim world.

Among those featured on the Yad Vashem site is Dina Beitler, a survivor of the Nazi genocide that killed 6 million Jews in World War II. Beitler, who was shot and left for dead in a pit of bodies in 1941, recalls her story on the site, with Arabic subtitles.

"Holocaust denial in various countries exists, and so it is important that people see us, the Holocaust survivors, that they'll listen to our testimonies, and learn the legacy of the Holocaust — also in Arabic," Beitler, 73, said at Yad Vashem.

A range of sentiments toward the Holocaust exists across the Arab world, from simple ignorance about its details to outright denial, to a more complicated belief — often expressed by many Arabs — that the Holocaust did happen but does not justify what is viewed as Israeli persecution of Palestinians.

Nazi literature is accessible in many Arab cities and some of the media engage in anti-Semitic incitement. However, even Iran last year permitted the broadcast of a television miniseries that told the story of an Iranian diplomat in Paris who helped Jews escape the Holocaust — and viewers were riveted.

Still, Holocaust denial is quite common, said Edward Walker, a former ambassador to Israel and Egypt.

"Students often write their Ph.D. theses denying the Holocaust," he said. "Children are taught by elders that the Holocaust was a hoax. It's widespread in big universities in Cairo, so that means it's probably as common in the small ones in the rest of the country as well."

The problem also exists in Israel.

Last March, a poll showed that 28 percent of Israel's Arab citizens did not believe the Holocaust happened, and that among high school and college graduates the figure was even higher — 33 percent.

Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev said Arabic-language Holocaust education was long overdue.

"Providing an easily accessible and comprehensive Web site about the Holocaust in Arabic is crucial," he said. "We want to offer an alternative source of information to moderates in these countries, to provide them with reliable information."

The Israelis are committing the same crimes they want others to remember. People will not sympathize with any country if that country keeps violating every single international law known to mankind.

If intentionally starving more than 1.5 million of an occupied population, cutting water supplies and putting all hospitals in jeopardy by an occupation force is not a holocaust, then what is it?

Jews are committing acts of genocide?

Maybe so, but the Jews are in a very difficult security situation. I mean, pretty much every Arab in the region wants to do to them the exact same things Hitler did to them, Palestinians included.

I've read the hate-mongering literature taught to children in school among many other things, and quite frankly, it disturbs me.

Israel is a sheep among wolves so to speak.

Its called a seige and the differences are simple a numerious.

for one thing all Hamas had to do to stop the seige is to STOP FIRING ROCKETS AT ISRAEL.

The Jews of Europe never fired rockets into Germany - nor did they kill people in cafes in suicide bombings - nor did they roll around in masks toting automatic weapons talking about how they wanted to kill every German in Germany.

In short Israel's actions are in defense of attacks on its citizens - Germany's actions were not.

The other simple difference is that Germany killed 6,000,000 Jews in 4 years.

Israel has killed about 3,500 Palestinains in the last 20 years. At the same time they have lost about 1,000 to Palestinian attacks.

it is plainly self-serving and disingenious to compare the two. All the Palestinians need to do to have peace - is give peace to the Israelis. The Jews did not have that option in Europe.

Agreed.

No one wants the Palestinians to suffer, but this is not a one-sided conflict, where the Israelis are purposely trying to kill off a people. The Israelis also have to defend their citizens from the constant rocket attacks from the Palestinian side. It gets to be a chicken-and-egg story, where each side claims the other struck first to justify their actions; who will be brave enough to cease their retaliation?

I believe that if one side ceased their military actions entirely they would gain the moral upper ground and have the support of the international community; but most importantly they would actually be taking steps to peace!

As long as some radical Palestinian groups think that the only solution to the conflict is to fire missiles at Israeli cities, there will be no peace.
