Does theocracy as a form of government work in modern society?

Theocracy is the belief in government by divine guidance, for example the government in Iran. Does theocracy as a form of governement work? Or is theocracy exclusionary?

In the case of Iran as a prime example, theocracratic institutions seem to function, but the people are repressed, the economy is weak due to lack fo foreign investment, and there is no healthy opposition - due to the repression, weakness, and fear.
In today's society it seems that more liberalized policies are needed - socially, economically, and politically.

Any form of government that represses its citizenry and stifles opposition is not the best, but the citizens of each country are entitled to a government system that works for them, no matter the name attached to it. Some forms of government evolved through local customs and tradition and some of this traditional societies are skeptical of recolonisation in the name of globalisation. For instance Theocracy seems to flourish in countries where religion and religious leader are put before any other human need. From a moral point of view, Theocracy may seem appealing but morality alone is not enough as welfare of the citizens, national economic growth and observation of fundamental freedoms should be paramount.

okay i hear you i think the type of system a country uses is situational.Theocracy, democracy,or whatever form of governing system it uses it must work for the country.Democracy has its own disadvantages-we talk of freedom of speech but where on earth does it exists BBC churns british propaganda,CNN the same its a matter of pursuing your agenda. is democracy about oppressing others-who is that one to detect to others on what to door how to run your country.the success or the good of any system depend s on who is commenting about it. is there democracy in pakistan yet the champions of democracy are quiet about it because musharraf is one of them.

Western democracy has no doubt helped enhance freedoms around the world, but it has its limitations, including its unsuitability for certain cultures. There are traditional types of governments that existed before western democracy such as traditional jurisprudence in many parts of Nigeria. Western democracy is not for every country.

The comparative benefits of different governance may be discussed for the proper understanding. We may omit reference of particular country or person if it is not inevitable.
The evolution of governments matched with the time and environment.Amazinglly, there are influences of superstition, faith and belief in every governmernt. We may also recall how many peoples across the world were killed in the name of fanaticism, nationalism and some other imposed philosopy or to satisfy the hunger of power of particular person.
