Contradictions Between Globalization and National Identity
December 30, 2007 - 02:47 AM

The term nationality has come to have different meanings for different individuals, but to most, it is still the very basis of their identity and defines who they are in the world. Wars and conflicts, even ones on the scale of World War I and II and the genocides in Yugoslavia had been sparked this very touchy topic, and yet globalization, the new movement that dominates a majority of the world, seeks to somehow fill these rifts between different people of different nations.

How can individuals still preserve their national identity if they recognize themselves to be part of a single society that comprise of the population of the entire earth? What about the national pride that was powerful enough to cause people of one nation to rise up and kill others - people that they don't know at all - simply because they are of a different nation? Should nationality be considered an obstacle in the path of globalization, should it be overcome, or could the two go hand in hand to create a more ideal and peaceful world?

A very good question, I am surprised it has no replies yet. Let me be the first. =)

My answer, is of course, they can go hand-in-hand. But first, the definition of a 'global identity' must be made. National identity would fill in the vague gaps that the global identity would have.

And yes, it must have gaps. We live in different climatic conditions, were brought up in different cultures, predominantly eat different food, and none of this need be changed.

The global identity movement has more to do with us identifying each other first as human beings, secondly as a American, or Canadian, or African. It is recognizing that we are all born with the same rights to education, freedom, and justice. It is allowing every member of the earth equal amount of opportunity to develop potential.

A global identity would mean a movement for human enlightenment but it does not at all mean one has to sacrifice cultures and traditions of their national identity.

Cheers!

Definitely disappointed that no one else has responded...so here's something that would hopefully get people to notice this:

I believe that the concept of nationality should be abolished. In our inter-connected, hyper-realistic world that we live in, the idea of one's nationality is losing its grip as other ways of identifying ourselves come to light. Young people are defining themselves less as a product of a geographic/cultural region and more with the identity that they have created online.

To better understand this, we have to first look at the concept of the nation, and more explicitly, "the nation state" - this is a relatively recent term...and more often than not, many of today's political borders that divide one country from another were arbitrarily drawn by a bunch of colonialists in the 20th century.

Nationalism is a form of tribalism which is a way to distinguish ourselves from the Other. By default, this applies to any sort of identification - the deity I pray to, the music I listen to, the etiquette I practice. When I know that I am different from you, because of the choices that I (or others) have made, it makes it easier for me to know how to interact with you.

But what happens when this interaction now happens where everyone is, in a sense, blind? That is what the internet allows us to do, no? we can create whatever identity we want - or affiliate ourselves with people who share the same interests as us...I don't think that this is any different than before, but since we are no longer bounded by geographical lines, it makes us more "globalized" than "national"

Not sure if this makes any sense, but feel free to respond and I can clarify more...

Thanks for your opinions!

DeepEndZen - Although abolishing the concept of national identity seems to create an idealistic world of greater equality and cooperation, it's rather difficult to realize. Take the Internet that you used as an example. While it's true that the Internet is connecting the world into ever closer networks of communication and interaction, it doesn't always take away the geographical and cultural identity of individuals. When you "meet", talk to, or read the opinions and thoughts of other people on the Internet, don't you ever stop to wonder, where is this person from? (and also how old they are? Gender? Political views?) Especially if what you've read completely contradicts your own beliefs, you may want to go and find out where the person is from, then, although we try not to do this, assign regional stereotypes to them or use this cultural difference to explain why they are different and assure yourself that you are completely normal like everyone else who share the same nationality as you.

I must agree, however, that the Internet does ameliorate certain issues relating to national identity, such as racism, prejudice, stereotypes, etc. There is no way of telling, but the continual development of the Internet and other forms of communication and mass culture may eventually cause the notion of national identity to fade into the background. Nationalism may eventually be just a passing fad. After all, it was not always so persistent, and was rather passive until the mid 19th century. If this is to happen, though, it would probably take a long, long time.

I ran out of room, so here goes...

Padfoot - I think the applying the concept of global identity is a great way to assess the current movement of globalization. What global identity provides individuals should be what globalization aims for, but not all individuals would accept this concept. Even in the unified Italian state, which has been in existence since 1850, the people still now consider themselves as being a Florentian, Venetian, Milanian, etc. before being an Italian. In addition, people holding great power, wealth, and influence would be reluctant to allow unprivileged people the same opportunity to succeed in society, just as the wealth, influence, status, race, and other unchangeable factors affect many aspects of life today, including college admissions, employment, gaining of political office, etc. Do you think that global identity is truly achievable, based on the current state of international interests and the very nature of human beings that has never changed since the beginning of history?

Frantz Fanon has penned an interesting essay in this context titled " On National Culture" in his famous work The Wretched of the Earth

Yes and no.... I see where you're going, but I honestly don't think that nationality is as important as the other factors you listed. The whole nature vs nurture argument comes into play here - who did they learn from, religious beliefs, who were their parents etc, more than what country/region did they come from?

No doubt one's nationality has some influence - but consider someone who's black, but is born and raised in Germany? Nationally they are German, but would you say that that overrides other factors like race?

*raises an eyebrow* The topic I believe, is Nationality versus, or rather, working with, global identity. Your ref. to his skin colour would factor in race, which was not mentioned.

As for your question, the person in question would of course answer to being German, and his national identity would infact be that of any other German person.

In defining a global identity, we're talking about ideologies and laws, where else in national identity, it's what we eat and wear. They can exist symbioticly.

Well; my own contribution is that people should see all our differences such as - nation, tribe, cultures; languages; race and colors as the wonderfull hands of God avaliable for us all to learn from each other and increase our knowledge in this life bywhich we can understand ourselves and then live in peace than contraditing issues which keep longing globalization .

Even i sugest we get down to the grass root of this segregation among ourselves - the TRIBAL DIFFERENCES which has if not causing wars and distructions within a nation, I mean this tribal notion has stand as political backbone in Africa where even political parties are tribal affairs and when other tribe or political party as you can see loses in an election conflict will easily erupt because of the ideology of WE ARE different....just as what happened few months ago in Kanya etc.

So how can we make the youths and our young generation escape from this wrong conceptcool

Adult education and the empowerment of the individual in a global society is important when looking at globalization in a worldwide manner. In what way is globalization impacting the educational expectations for females? Has this become a serious issue around the world?
