Congratulations Israel
December 10, 2007 - 04:36 PM

Let us thank Israel for its fourth-largest contribution--after USA, Russia, and France--to world civilization! We all know, of course, that these exports are only for stability, security, peace, and for preserving the rule of law and order.

Defense Min.: Israel now world's fourth largest weapons exporter

Israel has passed Britain to become the world's fourth largest exporter of weapons, Defense Ministry Director-General Pinchas Bucharis said on Sunday.

Israel exported a total $4 billion in defense exports in 2007, Bucharis said. The United States, Russia and France lead the world's list of exporters.

The Defense Ministry held a special session on Sunday to present to arms dealers and security export companies details of a new law set to go into effect at the end of the month regarding the supervision of defense exports.

The new supervision law takes into account considerations of national security, foreign policies and international agreements, Bucharis emphasized during the session.

Defense exports supervisor Eli Pinko called the law revolutionary, adding that it would turn Israel's defense establishment from a recipient of services to world provider and regulator.

Defense Ministry legal adviser Ahaz Ben-Ari said an important issue covered in the new law is Israel's ability to supervise international mediation of defense equipment acquisitions and sales between Israelis and foreign sources abroad.

"Israel will not serve as a refuge for people dealing with security exports that the defense establishment has decided to embargo," Ben-Ari said. He added that violators of the supervision law would now be subject to severe penalties and fines.

I couldn't yet find a 2007 stats, but I did find tables on the expenditures of developing countries. It's a given that the Security Council countries spend a hell lot more than everyone else, so you may look for it elsewhere. The formatting is a bit off but I think the stats are visible enough.

Arms sales (agreements) by the Leading Recipient Developing Nations, 1999-2006 (in billions of current U.S. dollars)

Rank Country Amount spent Percent of total

1 India 22.4 11.0
2 China 17.4 8.0
3 Saudi Arabia 16.4 8.0
4 Egypt 13.3 6.0
5 U.A.E 12.5 6.0
6 Israel 10.9 5.0
7 Pakistan 10.9 5.0
8 South Korea 6.7 3.0
9 South Africa 6.1 3.0
10 Singapore 4.0 2.0
11 Rest of developing countries 89.8 43.0

Arslan - I am confused - what is the occasion? and why is Israel singled out for being "fourth" on the list? Why not Russia for being second or France for being third?

Is this really anything besides anti-Israeli propaganda? I seem to remember you defending Russian arms sales to Chavez and Ahmadinejad - so...

Is this simply a matter that you don't like Israel so you want to make them look bad?

what is the purpose of your thread?

while we are congratulating Israel - perhaps we should discuss some of the other areas in which they are among the world leaders.

Israel has the second highest output of new books in the world - which is amazing for a country of 10 million people.

more engineers and scientists per capita - and indeed they have more patents and scientific papers per captia then any other country.

more then 85% of its waste is treated in an environmentally sound manner.

Israel has the largest concentration of high tech industries - Windows XP, and cell phones were first developed in Israel.

They are also the world leader in Bio techs - like cameras which can be swallowed to help doctors diagnose patients - and the first radiation free breast cancer scanners.

They also have the highest number of solar panels in world and indeed just patented a tech which makes solor power 10 times more efficient.

I just thought we should bring this up as well - because I know Arslan that you want to be balanced - right? Your not just looking to bash Israel right?

Well, Luke, it just seems anything critical of Israel for you turns into "anti-Israel" propaganda and somehow you start questioning the wisdom of the thread when it is about criticizing Israel. Anyway, since you got my point wrong, let me explain.

I exactly put Israel after the USA, Russia, and France. I was being sarcastic about all four. Obviously, the first three are making more contributions to "world civilization" by selling arms to bandits around the world than Israel. However, as you mentioned, for a relatively small country like Israel, being the fourth is quite remarkable.

Again, you got my position on Russian arms sales to Venezuela and Iran wrong. When did I defend it? I simply pointed out hypocrisy of America. American sells arms worth tens of billions to Israel and several Gulf States but whines about Russian arms sales to Syria which a fraction of America's arms sales. Pointing this out--hypocirisy of America--is not exactly as supporting Russian arms sales.

Of course, you can point out that Syria supports Hamas. Are you sure Egypt and Saudi Arabia do not?

I have heard you many times, recently in your response to Yong, that it is hyporitical to criticize others while defending your own similar actions.

Do you want to criticize Russian arms sales to Iran and Venezuela? Fine, let us agree on that. But let us be consistent and be able to condemn other proliferators of small weapons of mass destruction like USA, France, and Israel. And Iran, North Korea, and China.

Regarding, books and scientiscs, there I can truly, without any sarcasm, congratulate Israel. That is truly remarkable and I just I wish neighboring Arab states could follow that path.

why are you acting as though you were providing a balanced critique of all 4 countries? Look at the title of the thread.

"it just seems anything critical of Israel for you turns into "anti-Israel" propaganda"

you are obviously targeting them, why play dumb?

You didn't start a thread about "the top 5 arms exporters" - this isn't even a news headline as its old news -

Instead you just pulled this out, and pulled them out of the pack, to beat Israel over the head with.

It is like if I started a thread about how Iran is financing Hezbullah and Hamas - its old news and if I started a whole thread on it - you would rightly ask me why I chose to pull it out at this particular moment.

"When did I defend it? I simply pointed out hypocrisy of America."

no, you defended the sales when we debated the missile defense shield. You weren't pointing out anything about American hypocracy - I was pointing to Russian hypocracy and you defended the sales.

Although - to be fair I don't think you defended sales to Ahmadinejad, but rather just Chavez.

"you can point out that Syria supports Hamas. Are you sure Egypt and Saudi Arabia do not? "

Egypt doesn't give the same level of support clearly - but I think it is Syria's support of Hezbullah -

and Syria's assassination of Hariri and of dozens of March 14 MK's that are more the issue.

"I just I wish neighboring Arab states could follow that path. "

I wish the neighboring Arab states would normalize relations withs Israel and allow Israel to share its expertise with the region - the entire economic situation would improve quickly. This is why, despite my reservations about Annapolis - peace must be pursued -

it is the only acceptable endgame - and the sooner it happens the sooner the region can benefit from it.

We can agree on something - more weapons, this world does not need. War profiteers should be carefully watched - and I would encourage Israel to focus more on the information and medical techs - then the military ones.

I am not going into debates what I axactly said or implied, so therefore I better focus on this issue directly. Let me explain further.

I am not sure this is old news. I know for sure that USA, Russia, and France have been top suppliers since the time immorial, but Israel, I think, became the fourth only this year. It was Britain until recently. It is clear that they are moving further in weapons proliferation.

The news actually is recent. It is not that I searched for Israel's arms sales specifically, but I just have a habit of reading Haaretz from time to time, and it was there I learnt about Israel's progress in this field.

So, the whole thread, yes, was about Israel but I specifically mentioned that it is the fourth (after USA, Russia, and France) in rank. Nowhere I implied that I would appreciate USA's, or Russia's, or France's arms sales.
