How can we improve online forums?

Hi everyone,
I think a lot of you would have great insights into this:
what would the ideal user friendly online forum look like?
For example:
-how do you think questions should be framed to create constructive dialogue?
-how would you organize topics and threads for easy use? (so much scrolling, searching, reading that we have to do! how would you manage it?)
-how would you moderate to discourage unproductive or inappropriate debates
-what doesn't work, what discourages people?
-other creative ideas!
cheers!
Corinne

Corinne,
I think first off for a good online forum, there needs to be a separate place for advertising. I’ve clicked on several links today and most of them link to facebook or myspace. That’s frustrating. So separate that. In terms of scrolling and reading, I would make all the font one size, one color, and minimal formatting available. Moderation would be done by volunteers, maybe even the people responding to the questions themselves. Not sure about that though, especially if the topic becomes popular. I think short sweet to the point questions encourage people. In fact that’s why I’m responding to your post. You did bullet points. You made it easy for me to respond to.
