I AM HIV NEGATIVE
November 28, 2007 - 03:17 PM

WHAT ABOUT YOU???

Well, after the much hyped HIV testing week begun, i challenged myself for the test and slowly headed to the center located at St. Pauls University Chapel.

The counselling went on well (infact, it felt like i was the one counselling the counsellor). When blood was drawn from my finger and put in the testing kits, tension filled the air as silence engulfed the room. After what seemed like an eternity, the results were out and as i expected, they were negative.

The tension should not in any way be taken to mean that i wasnt sure about my status, but even the surest of them all will be wondering what result may be recorded in the test, its probably the toughest moment of the whole period.

Well, if you have taken the test, share your experiences. If not, tell us why?

As much as I know, HIV can be transmitted sexually. And also from all the secretions of the body and blood. If you are free from sex and blood transfusion, free from kissing with prostitutes, you cannot have HIV.
I never go and take HIV +/- test, cos I never have sex or had blood transfusion.

I could guess about the tension.
but Its nuthing to be humiliated about.
Its because society potrays HIV/ AIDS as something to do with SEX.
where people tend to believe that it happens only for nymphos.

I guess there is nothing wrong with sex. But the stigmatization around the issue is what is hampering the fight against the scourge. Most definitely, when someone around you announces that they have HIV, your initial reaction may turn up as inappropriate whereas you are enlightened. Can you imagine the permanent reaction of people who have limited information on the disiese?

HIV doesn't transmit through kissing.. unless it is a "french" kiss and the person with the virus has some sort of wound or bleeding in the mouth.
and please don't call them prostitutes.. they are sex workers. many of them are forced. and even if they do it by their own consent, they are doing it to earn money for their families just like any of us who works for a living. try to respect their human rights. and it is not that all sex workers are hiv positive..

what i think is we shud go for hiv tests only when we are ready (after all, we do have counselling sessions before the tests!!), and whether the result is positive or negative, it's nothing to be ashamed of. it is the societies which have to learn to accept each of their members equally and not discriminate anyone just by their hiv status..

I could not have said it better myself. HIV or AIDS should define who a person is, it is just like other diseases that has no cure. Besides, a person can never know for sure if they do not have the virus until they have been tested for it. Most people still believe that you can tell if a person is HIV positive or not, which is so not true.

HIV positive people should not be made to feel ashamed, they are human beings just like me and you!

Just came from an HIV test here in Lusaka today and at no time was I scared or apprehensive. The test didn't go as expected but it went better than I expected.
