How Many Companies Will You Work For?

Would you rather work for just one or two companies during the span of your career or for a variety of companies? Why?

I think I would rather work for a variety, not saying that I would be disloyal, but after five or ten years my priorities might change. I would like to see the world and change the world and that means taking every available opportunity. I think it is really important to be loyal to the company that you work for but in this day and age loyalty is often not reciprocated, so why should I feel bad if 5 years down the road I decide I want or need a change?

Well - if I count all the companies that I have worked for (ie. received money for services), it probably numbers around 6-8.
And like the member who replied before me, its not for lack of loyalty, but rather, the skills that I can offer to any organization are completely transferable to any workplace.
I also am on a personal mission to absorb as much knowledge as I can from a multitude of sources, in the hope that I can start my own company in the (near) future.
I think that employment structure of working for one company for your entire career is an outdated model, which causes more problems in the long run (see Japan)

I should say the more the number of companies you have worked for the more your knowledge and experience base.
if you are keen on establishing your own company someday, the more experiences you have of how other companies you have worked for were managed and sustained the better you would be able to manage your own personal business.
it helps in the long run i guess.

Growing up, I never saw myself as the kind of person who would have a high number of different employers, but, I came to understand why that was a bit too quick of an assumption soon after graduating from university. Without enough experience to get a position in a desired field, I took the first full-time job I could get in order to pay the rent. Out of loyalty to my employer and a complacent attitude, I stayed in that position for 3 years. One day I woke up and realized that it was not the career path I envisioned for myself, it wasn't even a cause I actually believed in. Ever since then I've been working contracts for one meaningful job after another because it's not the number of jobs you have, but the passion you have for the work and the good you're doing with your contribution and if that takes 100 jobs in my lifetime, then so be it.
