Why is there racism?

Myself I do not understand how a person can dislike another just because of the colour of their skin, culture, religion etc. Why are people racist? I can see that some people become racist due to a bad situation which involves a certain race, but why don't the just dislike that person or people who mad them feel what ever the feel, why do they have to take it out on a whole social group? What in human nature makes a person racist. I know people who are rcist and I think they are how they are because 1. there parents have gown them up believing a person is bad, evil, no good, just because hey come from a certain race, 2. some thing has happened to them and they blame the race not the individual. But why? Some one please tell me, I don't understand, I dislike people, some are white people, some are black, some are catholic, some hindu, but I dislike them for who they are as a person or not even that, i dislike parts of their personality. I could never hate or dislike a whole race or group of people.
Can some one give me some light on this?
I don't understand.

I was reading something on this not too long ago. People feel most comfortable around those who are like themselves. This can lead to them thinking that if they had to make a choice between two strangers - a person like them, and a person with a different skin colour - to say who had done something wrong, they would chose the one that did not look like them. I guess it's somewhat in our nature. But that does not make it right, so that's why we need to fight against it.
