[Poll] Uncensored Internet
November 21, 2007 - 03:48 AM

The internet is no doubt as great an invention as the bra. It has changed the world, changed how many of us socialize and work, and it’s changed our global perspective. In short, the internet has given us access to information that we never would have been privy to prior to 1995 -- remember that silly term "information highway"?
But for all the positive it is has done, has the internet gone too far? Whether you know it or not, you can see TLC’s Left Eye Lopes seconds before she dies in a car crash, you can see a man tasered to death in a Vancouver airport or you can watch a human cadaver as its organs are harvested in the name of science during an autopsy. Those are just three examples, but there are a number of sites and live feeds dedicated to getting your endorphins going as you divulge in taboo viewings.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve come across on the internet? Has the internet desensitized you?
Does the internet need censoring or policing?

Yes, some of the internet has very nasty things on it, but if you don't want to see it, don't look for it? The real nasty things are when you search up something for research and (for example) it comes up with a porn picture.

Great choice of topic!
I do not believe in a censored internet. I think every person should be equally allowed access to any information whatsoever. I would be ignorant if I never knew the kinds of horrors we are capable of. I do not believe that blocking off certain sites is the way to counter them. I find this to be kind of cowardly. Are we not able to handle reality?
I'd want all opinions and information to be equally accessible by each person, to promote thinking for oneself and the questioning of everything we see. I am not desensitized by the disgusting things I've seen.
Most importantly, is the question of who decides what gets censored? What if that person is a particular businessman who could easily wipe off competition? What if it's someone who does not share your spiritual views?
Again, I stress that all information should be accessible for each person, so they can compare and decide for themselves what to think/believe.

Ok
You have the right to see everything
But a child shouldn't see some stuff =P
"Don't look if you don't want to"
Ok, that would be a good if people weren't so curious, but they are, and some of them like to see it.
Yeah, I really don't know, I mean, Ok, we have the right to see it, but on the other hand, it isn't very nice when you see things that you don't want to, There are a lot of words that if you google it, you will find some pretty weird results, "if you know what I mean"

I think you may have missed my point, Kaindeed. My position is that nobody has the authority to judge what is right and what is wrong. If you want, I can develop this argument further some other time.
Second, I think if kids want to browse sites with mature content, they should. With good parenting and guidance, it will only make them better people and less ignorant. Curiosity should trump all. Again, I think its only blind, ignorant and scared parents that block content. If little Jimmy is watching porn or beheadings and enjoying it, it's up to the parent to sit with them and ask them why. There should be no hostility, as the child is busy exploring his/her world.
My point is, just because I've seen, for example, racist websites - it does not mean I agree with it. Actually it made me dislike them more. There is nothing wrong with trying to learn and understand things that societal taboos forbid.
Again, it scares me that you say "that would be a good if people weren't so curious,". I could not disagree more.
What do you think, Kaindeed? I hope I didnt offend you =S.
Cheers!

I believe the information on internet should be accessible to all. There's no need to censor the net, because as is pointed out, guidance and good parenting is all a child needs to steer clear from stuff they must avoid. Curiousity is no sin, but caution must be exercised.
About internet, well, if you try to censor that, how far will it be successful? The net is vast and you cannot think of cesnoring it, with the amount of free website set-ups that are now online.
And, then, where will "Freedom of Expression" go to?
What will be the point of internet? So, in my opinion, a little bit caution is all that is needed instead of outright censorship, because once started, it will definitely curb down a lot of other important things too.

Being the way I am, i thought the controlling and censoring of internet is a great idea. But then again, i though censoring the media was a good idea also, and i guess that's a very socialist way of thinking. To me, censorship will lower a lot of the problems, and make people focus on the more important subjects. Then of course, when censorship is abused, it is turned into a rights issue.

Rape videos. Insurgents blowing up humvees in Iraq, Kiddie porn. If you post videos of an actual crime somebody really really should make the effort to trace the connection. This sort of censorship already happens and frankly we need more of it.
As for tubgirl and autopsy videos, you're a sick freak if you watch or post that but you're not legally a criminal. Besides, sites like Liveleak may show exploding humvees but they'll also show you American fighter pilots bombing the wrong place...

While I don't agree with censorship, I do agree with abiding to guidelines to ensure freedom of expression. I DO think that porn sites & violent and bloody site should have that warning/disclaimer thing. I do think that websites should have a terms and conditions. However, people are entitled to have opinions and views.
Who has the power to decide what is really important for the people to access?
As for porn coming up in search results, I like what google does, that by default, the family filter is on and they do their best to keep that off unless the person chooses to turn it on themselves.
Honestly, there is very little that internet content creators can do about how their information is accessed and how much warning it can have, as in the end, when there are those "put in your birthday before proceeding", or "check this box if you are 13 or under" and whatever, you really can't stop a minor from lying. The internet doesn't have a lie detector yet!
More important that ANY censorship from an external group, association, or the goverment is rules and guidelines for access in the home. I don't think the whole blame should be left to the internet alone for having content available for kids to find. The way the internet is, looking for sex and violence online is not that hard. If someone wants to find it, of legal age or not, they will.
I think that proactive actions from the family is much more important than trying to police the internet. If parents are truly worried about what their kids access online, the very least they can do, before trying to villify the web, is to install family filters and netnanny and the likes, and more than that, have open and honest conversations with their kids about what is appropriate, what is not, and if they notice their kids trying to search for "innapropriate" content, to be open to discuss it with them. It is the very least a concerned parent should do, instead of saying "omg the internet has evil stuff on it and its going to corrupt my little kid!!" and then sit around and do nothing about it other than complain.
