Politics of Unemployment and Youth
November 15, 2007 - 01:55 PM

Governments come and go and the people remain. It is the people that are government. Their is no mystry here and the fact remains that politics has been said said to be a too serious business to be left to the politicians alone. Unemployment has beeen increasing in geometric progression and workplace and ventures to accomodate them are increasing arithematically.
What the youth of the world today needs is the political will to see the vision of employment acheieved for them and that dream can only be achieved collectively, when the people realize that employment is crime free society and that when the youth are employed, they tend to become responsible and work for the development of the society, even more...

We need also to move from the idea of waiting to be employed but to be employers.African governments should move to a stage of empowering the people so that they can employ themselves or at least be "employable"
We need policies like indeginisation and not just wait for donor funds which can lead to laziness.I mean who would want to go to work if you know that some donor somewhere can come and give you food.
We need to move away from this kind of mentality.
African governments should make sure that the youth or the indeginous people own the means of production like land mines etc. This can be a very effective tool to fight poverty and unemployment.

I have to agree with your opinions on this issue. But I think that one of the laws of power is dependency on others, and our leadership is making great use of this law to infect the citizenry.
It is not about ideas my friend, it is not about doing something. It is about participation, community building and about support towards a society that is free and sustainable.
I know some progresses are right now being recorded, especially in my community and state, even some places in Nigeria. But we need more...
I advocated to strengthening of our Youth Councils and the prolification of creative ideas that will employ us without grants, but grants are desirable and would also be necessary.
The possible, especially, in the short run and for a quick win, is for an aggrement of the governments of Africa to implement the African Youth Charter and some components of the CEDAW, which will see youth of Africa become empowered without us and them.

What the government should do is invest in infrastructure and education and promote a fiscal policy that is attractive for possible investors.
New business opportunities => new investments => new jobs. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Culture is largely invisible to the people brought up in it.

Well, i can definitely see the great ideas in your response to unemployment and youth in Africa,
My suggestion is! Have we taken time to look at the education system we have in Africa. What am saying is very few African countries if not non has thought of changing the education curriculum, Our education system in Africa is more Theoretical than piratical,We are being taught how to look for jobs rather than creating jobs.
I believe before we look any other solution, let has consider the foundation and the roots of what qualifies has for a job. Receiving loans and grants plus Setting up projects to create jobs will be short term solution peoples mind set is still limited by creativity.

Without involving the youth in the leadership of the 21 century, I doubt what the future hold.
