I agree with the person above. The issue of semantics with the media censoring the language is a huge problem when it comes to exceptionalism.
I think that, especially with the Israel/Palestine conflict, the U.S. needs to stop the media's interference with misleading the American public. If more Americans knew about this, I think it wouldn't be as common in the world today.
America makes exceptions with the human rights laws, and I think that this not only ruins Americans' image of their own country, but also the images that other countries have. It blemishes our reputation around the world and leads to the anti-Americanism that is so common today.

In regards to the Israel and Palestine conflicts, i have mixed feelings over it. This is a topic that i had never even known existed, which is shocking. It really hurts me to learn about conflicts that I have know control over. Because i hear them and i want to help, but in this case, i cannot. I cannot believe that the U.S. favors one country over the other in an unfair way. I am really interested to hear from someone from Palestine, so that i can hear their views on the subject; perhaps then, i can have an even better understanding as to the whole situation. I would really love to hear the opinions of someone who is actually there and is living the conflict presently.

I think in discussing the issue of Israel/Palestine you have to be aware of the history, context and complexity of the issue.
ask yourselves how you would want our government to react if a neighboring land was firing rockets on a continual basis against schools, residential areas...
how would you feel if a rocket hit your kids school'? Or if members of your family or friends died in a suicide attack.
Israel has perhaps the greatest challenge of any country in the world in balancing human rights and national security. There is room for critique certainly, but when judging I suggest you try to imagine what it is like to be an Israeli.
It is a bit of a tired old charge that the media is misleading Americans on this issue - we all have Youtube and the internet at our fingertips.
In discussing media and its treatment of the Israeli/Palestinian - a very controversial issue -
you should take a look at how Arab media treats the subject - you will find a great deal of media bias as many outlets do not even refer to Israel by name, but instead as the "Zionist entity"
Also - in terms of reporting in the Palestinian territories - it is difficult.
there was a rash of kidnappings of western journalists in Gaza - so many Western journalists were kidnapped last year that many Western media outlets were forced to close their branches in Gaza - this has effected their ability to report on what happens in the territory.
Currently, Since Hamas's violent take over of the territory - there has been severe censorship and arrests of journalists, Palestinian journalists as well as foreign.
Hamas has intimidated journalists in the territory and there have been major confrontations.
what we can agree on is the fact that there is a great deal of misinformation on this issue from both sides.

aarmstrong,
you sound like such a great teacher. your students all seem to understand the issues well, which is a tough job for any educator. do you teach in public school?
as for exceptionalism, it drives me crazy. i love living in America, but at times i feel ashamed to call myself an American. the hypocracy of so many of our actions has ruined our reputation throughout the world. i hate that we are willing to jump into a confrontation when a few of our people are harmed and yet see no need to stop the massacre of thousands in Darfur.
Another great example of our hypocracy is evident to those who have seen the movie "Red Dawn". our country is invaded "For our best interest" (according to the "bad guys" and the rebles who form guerilla groups attacking the invader are the heroes. how can we not see that this is the mindset of so many of those we are fighting in real wars?
