PCs Being Pushed Aside in Japan
November 12, 2007 - 09:07 AM

...
The PC's role in Japanese homes is diminishing, as its once-awesome monopoly on processing power is encroached by gadgets such as smart phones that act like pocket-size computers, advanced Internet-connected game consoles, and digital video recorders with terabytes of memory.

"A new PC just isn't high on my priority list right now," said Igarashi, who was shopping at a Bic Camera electronics shop in central Tokyo and said his three-year-old desktop was "good for now."

"For the cost, I'd rather buy something else," he said.

Japan's PC market is already shrinking, leading analysts to wonder whether Japan will become the first major market to see a decline in personal computer use some 25 years after it revolutionized household electronics — and whether this could be the picture of things to come in other countries.
...
Overall PC shipments in Japan have fallen for five consecutive quarters, the first ever drawn-out decline in PC sales in a key market, according to IDC. The trend shows no signs of letting up: In the second quarter of 2007, desktops fell 4.8 percent and laptops 3.1 percent.

NEC's and Sony's sales have been falling since 2006 in Japan. Hitachi Ltd. said Oct. 22 it will pull out of the household computer business entirely in an effort to refocus its sprawling operations.

Japan always had a 10-year or so advance in technological development and its role in daily lives of the nation than the other developed countries.

Seeing how PCs are being pushed aside by Japanese, is this what expects us also in nearest 5-10 years?

I believe so. One reason why computers and the internet clicked on the world market is the convenience that they offer. Information now comes at the click of a button. Transactions can be done without us leaving our homes.

I sure would love to access my email or TIG on my way to the gym, or while I'm standing in line at the coffee shop. No more waiting 5 minutes for your pc to boot.

In my part of the world, this technology is already available in minuscule amounts. Laptops are still basically the "must-haves" and I think it'll take more than five to ten years before they get replaced by a new type of technology.

I am quite excited about it, though. Thanks to them crafty Japanese. =)

thats the step that should have been took a long time ago to give those PC manufacturers a lesson
as a matter of fact am a PC addict and enthusiast i always upgrade to the latest PC hardware but the manufacturers and the PC games and applications developer seriously passed their limits there .
lets be honest you will buy a super high end pc at home for 1 of 2 reasons 1-play those super duper gfx PC games or 2-ur dealing with huge media and 3d art and for the 2nd one a PC that is 1 year old may serve well too so basicaly the newest pcs are just for gaming
as for todays new PCs that would cost you around 2,500 for me as a gamer to grab a decent PC that MIGHT last 6 month in this era for gaming
look at the price 2,500 $$ you can grab nowadays a superb high end console like PS3 or Xbox360 for 600 $$ for the elite higher capabilities console and you will be sure that you wont need to upgrade the vga card or the processor for around 5 to 7 years wooooow look at the difference in price
and then you can get a decent phone with wifi included to access your mail or you know what the x 360 and the ps3 got wifi already you dont even have to buy the phone unless you are always mobile
and buy a decent blue-ray dvd reader to watch your movies thats another 600$$ and you dont even need to bother thinking to buy a new pc
while also the game developers push the game to far beyond it needs from requirements as part of their deals with pc hardware manufacturers in consoles there isnt such a thing cuz you wont change anything in it
am following the same track as the Japanese in fact i stooped upgrading my pc and saving to buy a decent console instead

ooh and over all that look at the amount of space required for a decent PC (enormous) compared to a console or to a palm
add to that the electricity usage of pc's nowadays are faaar tooo much comeone a 850 watt to power up my gaming monster thats a loooot.
lol and the funny fact is i usually use my smart phone to access the internet even tho i got the pc lol funny huh
