[Poll] Asking your opinion on women rights..
November 9, 2007 - 06:36 PM

I was recently traveling to work and came across a free newspaper specifically geared to professional women.
Does this sound like a strange concept to you? Are we not passed this segregation?
I felt as though the act of excluding men from offering their professional perspective was simply adding to the suppression of women.
Let me explain further, if we continue to isolate ourselves as a group we will continue to create an element of, sexism and judgment of the ‘group’ we fall under.
Can you image how much negative publicity there would be, if a newspaper was published that isolated women and was written specifically for men by men?
We ask for equality but then do not provide it.
Can we not break away from identifying man vs. women or women vs. man?
In my opinion, media would be better suited as a tool to act as and focus on culture based concepts and perspectives. Simply because we are very independently different in ways that can be expressed based on a scope of education, perspectives and cultural diversity. Focusing on this type of category use could potentially be a productive way to, communicate and share our differences.
If we continue to treat ourselves different from our human counterpart we will remain isolated as women, and perpetuate the lack of human equality under a concept of one nation.

So, how can we create a tool for women to voice their opinions; within the framework of your culture?

For example, can we create a group online (on Takingitglobal) for women in the area to share their life stories, experiences, needs, wants, or even job postings they could do from home or outside of home?

Can we work on this together?

I that publications just geared to women can be great for getting womens issues out there and to open dialogue between women about womens issues, but as well these publications only get to those women who are literate, and are often just for professional or wealthier (on a relative scale i suppose) women. It again comes down to getting women educated and then baing able to supply publications that can give them news and supplements to that education.
But I definitely think that they are helpful.

I have heard this argument before- that women (and all minority groups for that matter) only exacerbate inequality by separating themselves from the majority. I think this argument is quite absurd.

Minority groups, or groups with an unequal amount of power and visibility- unequal representation in politics, business, education, etc- need venues to express their views. Groups create these special publications for that reason exaclty- because mainstream media, publications, and society do not reserve space for these groups' views.

Spaces reserved specifically for women, or any other group, are absolutely necessary to interject greater diversity into society and to give minorities a stage on which they cannot be overshadowed by those already possessing power and visibility.

I think that women dont recieve what they put out. Decades ago women used to do most of the work around the house. This lead to the men doing all the work to help raise the family. This may be the way that things used to be but they are not like this anymore. Women are know starting to work for there own money. Society still seems to think that men work more than women.

I think it doesn´t hinder the development of the womens´ rights, it actually increases your acceptance among your work mates. maybe it causes greed, but greed is normally a good sign, it shows that people envy you, not underestimate you.
