What is important to you when selecting a government official? How do you go about getting your information? Blogs? Websites?

Hi,
I was wondering if "choosing a govt. official" here meant voting to choose a representative?
or does this question is much more than elections and also includes - who to approach or network with when you have to get some work started/done?
In both the cases- I would go by -my previous experiences with the person, views shared by others who have been in contact with that person, information about the person's history and work available in printed or other forms.
In India, it is difficult tofind such info on blogs or internet unless the person has been in news a lot...for the wrong reasons!

A leader must be morally upright because a post will only amplify his true nature. That is, if he is corrupt he will only become more corrupt. If he is a patriot he will use that office to express his paatriotism on a bigger platform. Then secondly we look at his mindset. is he progressive or bitter?
