Western models of government are best described as broadcast democracy. Politicians broadcast to voters for set periods - two, four or six years -- through TV advertisements and TV soundbites.

Do you think this is an outdated way to communicate and reach with young voters? If so, why?

Unfortunately, in many cases, I believe the young voter has lost faith or lost interest in many of the beliefs of the various political parties. Thus, it may be safe to say that many young voters decided to forfeit their votes by not voting. The form of media in which these western political parties are using will not reach the ears of those not taking note, so perhaps the form of communication is not outdated as much as the policies of those running for office.

I believe TV is still a relevant way for politicians to reach young voters. TV is still a very popular form of entertainment which means wide exposure.

However - TV is no longer the only/main form of media popular with young people. Many spend as much, if not more, time on the internet. It is not just the amount of time they spend on it... they are also very internet savy. Online news, blogs, live chats - many youth are so comfortable with these forums. They are also a way for politicians to reach youth more directly and interactively.

So - while I don't think broadcasting on TV is outdated yet - the internet may offer a slightly better edge for reaching young people.
