Confidence: Business Building Blocks.
May 24, 2003 - 06:11 AM

Most people start their businesses without ever completing a thorough, honest appraisal of themselves and their personal, family, and business needs and goals. A lot of things goes into having and building a successful business. Just as the conventional house is made up of building blocks, in just the same way, a business is made up of building blocks.

One of those blocks that every business should have is CONFIDENCE. Confidence speaks of the character of a person. This is a personality attribute that every businessman should possess. While SKILLS and TALENTS have there places in business, the place of character in business cannot be overemphasized.

Let me quickly make some clear-cut definitions of certain business terms here, before I dig deep into the very nature of confidence in the business world. I would like to briefly define the terms, Skills, Talents, & Attributes;
SKILLS are things that a businessman can do.
TALENTS are the natural endowments of a businessman. ATTRIBUTES are characteristics of a businessman.

Confidence occupies an undeniable position in a businessman’s quest for excellence and exploits in his business. In today’s business world, only the confident reign and the fearful are slaves. Confidence to me is one of the currencies of life. When you show confidence in anything, people will give you the product.

Confidence commands enormous authority in the marketplace. These are what your customers and competitors understand and respect. When you are unsure of yourself and demonstrate a lack of confidence, people will look down on you and step on you.

Every enviable businessperson you see today that exudes unusual and unparalleled business confidence has this great business attribute as one of his character make up. Confidence to me is the backbone of every courageous businessman. To build, develop and grow your business to your dream pattern, you must have this unique building block in business that is called CONFIDENCE. Boldness is great, but without confidence in yourself, business, board of directors, management team, staff, products and services, why would you expect others to have confidence in you.

The question now is how solid is your business foundation? And how do you build your confidence? Do you have most of the necessary business building blocks in place?

BUSINESS VISION is the foundation of every business. Where there is no vision, the business has no future. It is the business vision that determines the direction and core focus of every business. When your business vision is well articulated and clearly known to all in your organization, then you have succeeded in laying the foundation of your business on a very good footing.

Every business foundation is reinforced by confidence on the parts of the founding fathers. Bill Gates and Paul Allen had great confidence in the software programs they wrote in the early days of their company. Today Microsoft foundation is still standing firm on the confidence built-up by these two great businessmen, Gates and Allen.

The kind of confidence that Bill Gates has in his brain, is the same kind of confidence that Mike Tyson has in his fist. Michael Jackson has that confidence in his voice and footwork, Eddie Murphy has that same kind of confidence in his jokes. So why can’t businesspeople have and build that same kind of confidence in what they do, what they have, what they want to have, who they are, who they want to be, where they are, where they want to be, etc. Let them build confidence in and around all they do and represent. Confidence, the right kind of confidence will exalt a man anywhere and anytime. I believe strongly in this fact.

Confidence is a business strategy. Confidence is a war strategy. Confidence is what our competitors uses to render us powerless in the business world. When a man’s confidence is broken is heart is broken.

What is CONFIDENCE? Confidence is nothing but a strong sense of certainty. That is, to be sure beyond any shadow of doubt. Confidence is a strong belief in yourself, others or a thing that is spoken. And in today’s real world, nothing strengthens confidence like facts. Businesspeople with FACTS and FIGURES display more confidence, than others who have little or no access to business facts.

A businessman that has no confidence in anything internal and external should never expect or think he can attract confidence from people. Picture this scenario for example, a businessman that has been invited for an international business conference in France. This man need to generate enough confidence in the organizers of the business conference inviting him, enough confidence in the invitation letter that is sent to him, enough confidence in his own documents he is carrying to the French embassy in his home country. This man needs to have full confidence in the French embassy willingness and ability to issue him a business visa. He needs to have confidence all the way through. Why do you expect the French embassy to issue a business visa to a businessman that does not demonstrate confidence before the consulate officer? I strongly believe that “YOUR CONFIDENCE IS YOUR EVIDENCE in life. The stronger your faith in what you doing as a businessman, the stronger your confidence in that business.

Having said much about confidence as an attribute of businesspeople, the next logical question would definitely be, how do I build my confidence as a businessman?

There are two essential ways to build confidence in this information age. They are;
1. Practice the use of confidence.
2. Locate business facts and figures.

One way to develop your confidence is simply to PRACTICE using your confidence. If I were to ask whether you’re confident that you can tie your own shoes, I am sure you could tell me with perfect confidence that you can. Why? Only because you have done this a couple of hundred times. So practice confidence by using it consistently, and I am sure you will be surprised by the miracles this will produce in your business life.

Another way to build confidence in the business world is to be armed with Relevant, Accurate, Timely, and Evident-based business FACTS AND FIGURES. You need business facts to be fat in business. And you need business figures in business to be able to figure out things when they are going wrong in your business. Without facts and figures in business, you cannot identify the trend of events in the industry where you operate.

If you do not have most of the necessary business blocks, I am afraid you will not go far in building the business of your dream. Below are some of the most important business building blocks. Like I said earlier, these blocks are the characters that a businessman must possess. Over the years I have researched a number of individual billionaires and millionaires in the field of business, who by every standard have businesses that are fully developed. The list includes Microsoft, chief software architect, Bill Gates, Dell Computers CEO, Michael Dell, Ted Turner of CNN, Henry Ford of Ford Motors, and George Soros of Quantum fund. All these businessmen are billionaires that have shown great confidence in their various industries. And for the millionaires I have researched extensively on the business lives and confidence levels of people like Sean Combs “Puff Daddy or P. Diddy, Mike Tyson, Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, and Don king. My sole goal was to know the foundational qualities that made them to succeed in their various businesses. I wanted to know the characters they had developed that enable them to get a least a portion of the things that money can buy without losing the thing that money cannot buy.

These are the qualities that I found out in these businessmen. These are the building blocks of people like Bill Gates, Rockefeller John, Michael Dell, Ted Turner, George Soros, Richard Branson, Rupert Murdoch, Ross Perot, Henry Ford, Steve Jobs, Harrison Ford, Serena Williams, Sean Combs a.k.a. Puff Daddy, Bob Marley, Eddie Murphy, Don King, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Mike Tyson, Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, Nelson Mandela. The building blocks I saw in some and almost all of them are;
1. Diligence
2. Courage
3. Commitment
4. Compassion
5. Consistence
6. Convictions
7. Creativity
8. Decisiveness
9. Flexibility
10. Focus
11. Generosity
12. Goal getter
13. Good listener
14. Humility
15. Intelligence
16. Motivation
17. Open-mindedness
18. Persistence
19. Positive mental attitude
20. Self-image
21. Self-starter
22. Self-reliance
23. Team player
24. Vision
25. Wisdom
26. Passion

I have just giving you some information that can potentially change your life and the way you think about how businesses should be developed. It is the most encouraging business information you may ever receive from anywhere in the business world. Developing these business blocks will help you be most of the things your heart strongly desires.

There are other business attributes not included in this list. I have chosen these ones because I have carried out extensive work on them. Expect to see more articles on some of these business blocks in my next business development articles.
