U.S. imposes sweeping new sanctions on Iran
October 25, 2007 - 01:10 PM
|
|
The Bush administration imposed sweeping new sanctions against Iran Thursday — the harshest in nearly three decades — cutting off key Iranian military and banking institutions from the American financial system for Tehran's alleged support for terrorism and nuclear weapons ambitions.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said the moves would further isolate the Islamic republic's government by further distancing it from the international economy and discouraging its trading partners from continuing to do business with it.
At the same time, they stressed that offers for negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program remain on the table and that the sacnctions are not a sign of imminent military action. The U.S. officials insist — over Iranian denials — that the nuclear program is a cover for atomic weapons development.
The United States has long labeled Iran a state supporter of terrorism and has been working for years to gain support for tougher sanctions from the international community aimed at keeping the country from developing nuclear weapons. It has won two U.N. Security Council sanctions resolutions but a third has been held up by Chinese and Russian opposition.
Rice, who also noted Iran's hardline anti-Israel stance, said the moves were part of "a comprehensive policy to confront the threatening behavior of the Iranians" but that Washington remains committed to "a diplomatic solution."
Other officials echoed that sentiment, maintaining the announcement is not a prelude to armed conflict with Iran despite concerns from some allies that the administration is building a case for war.
"In no way, shape of form does it anticipate the use of force," said Nicholas Burns, the State Department's No. 3 diplomat.
Instead, officials said they hope the measures will increase pressure on Iran to take a deal offered last year that would give the oil-rich country economic and other incentives in exchange for dropping nuclear activities that could produce a bomb.
"Israel welcomes the U.S. government's decision," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said in Jerusalem. "We see this as an important contribution to the international effort to intensify pressure on Iran to abandon its nuclear program."

Iran should reconsider pursing it's nuclear program in the face of these new sanctions. If they don't work and military force is needed, heaven forbid, then Iran can't say they never had the opportunity to settle this issue diplomatically and peacefully...there will be no blaming the U.S. on this one.
What will Iran do....?

people will blame the US regardless, and the US has made some mistakes in its relations with Iran - but I agree that it is Iran's belligerance which is driving the dispute now.
I am glad for these new sanctions - I hope the EU follows suite.
the only way to avoid war is for these sanctions to succeed in diverting the Iranians weapons ambitions.

I am sure this issue will draw a lot of talk both on the local and global stage. However, a lot of sober mind analisys needs to made. The question is this, will the sunctuions realy hel;p or will they only work to further make the Iranian Citizens suffer? Is there a way to go around this issue of Nuclear threat? Personally, I am on the opinion that all the Nations with the Nuclear arsenals should set the example first by totaly destroying their Nuclear warheads completly in order that goodwill is created betwen Terhan and the International community. Imagine if it were you whom I had pointed a gun at your direction and telling at the same time that stop persuing a gun aquisition or else I shoot. I am sure that with the presence of the gun pointed at you will prompt you to look for any way possible to protect yourself in whatever way possible. How many countries are Nuclear States, How many countries have indeed used the Atomic bomb, even if it was for self defence? Looking at the Iranian History with the International community, one will clearly see how things have been going. It is a question of mistrust between Terhan and the International Community that will bring about disastrous ending to all this. If we couild be a little bit. honest with ourselves, we will see that sunctions will not help, neither will be the war. The only thing that can work hear is to create good will between these two factions and move towards peaceful solutions rather than confrontations. Strategically, we may have a situtuation where even after Terhan has been forced to completely dismantle its Nuclear progeram, the future generatioons may even come up with much dangerous programs for the sakwe of defending their rights and dignity. Are we ready for that?

well, these steps cant solve the iran problem,
i believe only negotiations, based on respect to each othe, and tolerance could solve the issue.
otherwise, if USA is going to use these methods of weakening iran, iran will speed up its nuclear program, then a war, or more tense situation,
i hate both of these situaitons

Why the US and other countire have huge amount of weapons of mass distruction/sale them and nobody cares? Why some counties have rights to start wars while people (including their own citizens) are not agree? Why one contry may think - our policy/position/values are only right ones?
Does the power of the US give them rights to judge others and to execute? Many people afraid of the US actions around the world but they do not care. So why Iran should care?
Why I should trust the US while I see they use the power to increase violence around the world?
As for Iran, I have no opinion about this country as I do not have unbiased information about this country.
LUCK of information is the way to misconception. and mass media manipulate with this so often nowadays that it leads towards to Global violence.
Brainwashing rules the world, does not it?

Because so-called leaders of the world are hyporites. By employing lies and deception, they intervene in other countries whenever they want, and you have this designation of a country's national Army as a terrorist entity--a subject related to this thread--in order to provide another legitimacy to a criminal military action being contemplated.
A catastrophe is loomong on the horizon in our backyard Peace2Peace, and it all very deeply disturbs me. I am becoming sick of all these things. Where the world is heading??

I ask the same thing about Islam , why should I trust this religion when it has caused so much violence in the world?

"in response to the agression by the west and USA"
they supported Al-Qaeda and a young lad called osama bin laden. they made him famous, and now they use it here and there, for their imperial ideas!

who are these muslims? US trained Al-Qaeda and a young lad OSama!
no body knew him during afghan jihad, but he was brought and made famous with his fellow Al-zawahiri!
so whatever u say! US is responsible for him, but cant [who knows, if it dont want to] control him!

If you want to learn more about what I'm trying to argue, read Robert Spencer's writings on Islam.
I think one of the biggest problems with the faith is that it's intolerable of criticism and will never take any responsiblity for what it's followers do in the name of allah.

ask the same thing about Islam , why should I trust this religion when it has caused so much violence in the world?
If the forces of Islam invaded two of your neighboring states and keep their troops there while battleships and aircraft carriers of the forces of Islam are meandering around your shores, ready to bomb your country at any time, I wouldn't see any problem with your distrust of the those forces. But for reasons of your own, you think that Iran, while being in exactly the same situation, should trust the US and its democracy.
If you want to learn more about what I'm trying to argue, read Robert Spencer's writings on Islam.
Why should Khaleed read Robert Spencer, a bigot whose writings on Islam has never been published by respected scholarly publishing houses, when Khaleed is far better qualified himself to speak on behalf of Islam? Spencer is an ignorant whose goals are to spread hate, nothing else.
I think one of the biggest problems with the faith is that it's intolerable of criticism and will never take any responsiblity for what it's followers do in the name of allah.
You think so becuase your faithfreedom.org and Spencer will never tell you about Muslims who are fighting extremism and terrorism, being especially hospitable to non-Muslims in Muslim countries to show the peaceful message of Islam, and that even in Iran reformers are showing movies sympathetic to Jews in defiance of bigot Ahmadinejad while former President Khatami has been a much better proponent of civilizational dialogue than Spencer.

This is taken from Wikipedia:
In 2006, he participated in a workshop on terrorist threats, jointly sponsored by the German Foreign Ministry and the United States Embassy Berlin.[2] In the same year, he conducted a workshop at the United States Central Command.[3] He has discussed jihad, Islam, and terrorism on a variety of television networks, as well as on numerous radio programs.
His writings on Islam and other topics have been published in the New York Post, the Washington Times, the Dallas Morning News, Canada's National Post, FrontPage Magazine, WorldNetDaily, Human Events, National Review Online, and in other publications. He has consulted with United States Central Command and the U.S. State Department and the German Foreign Ministry, and frequently appears on global media networks such as the BBC, CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC, PBS, C-Span, as well as on numerous radio programs including Michael Savage's Savage Nation, The Alan Colmes Show, The G. Gordon Liddy Show, The Neal Boortz Show, The Michael Medved Show, The Michael Reagan Show, The Larry Elder Show, The Barbara Simpson Show, Vatican Radio amongst others.
Bigots dont usually get this much airtime. He has proved his worth as an scholarly expert on the subject.
Faithfreedom.org is a online community of ex-Muslims, and believe me, they know what they're talking about. They've debated with Islamic shcolars and put these debates online, check it out for yourself.

This is Spencer's repsonse to criticism of his work, also taken from Wikipedia:
In response to criticism, Spencer states that none of his critics have substantiated their claims of inaccuracy in his work, but content themselves with broad and vague accusations. He says:
"I present the work not on the basis of my credentials, but on the basis of the evidence I bring forth; evaluate it for yourself. One example: after I spoke at the University of North Carolina, Professor Carl Ernst of the university wrote a piece about me warning that my books were non-scholarly and were published by presses that he believed reflected a political agenda of which he did not approve. That kind of approach may impress some people, but Carl Ernst did not and cannot bring forth even a single example of a supposed inaccuracy in my work. I would, of course, be happy to debate Carl Ernst or any other scholar of Islam about Islam and jihad; this is a standing invitation."[1]
Spencer has criticized academics at his web site writing that he opted not to enter any PhD program because he "could see [in 1986] that Middle East Studies and other departments were becoming highly politicized and retreating from genuine academic work".[19][1] About charges of "bigotry" and "hatred" from Ernst[20] and others he says:
"It is not an act of hatred against Muslims to point out the depredations of jihad ideology. It is a peculiar species of displacement and projection to accuse someone who exposes the hatred of one group of hatred himself: I believe in the equality of rights and dignity of all people, and that is why I oppose the global jihad. And I think that those who make the charge know better in any case: they use the charge as a tool to frighten the credulous and politically correct away from the truth."[20]

Bigots dont usually get this much airtime.
They sure do. I can give you many examples if you insist on your statement.
But the airtime you mentioned are all from the media. Name me a scholar of Islam--I am not talking about scholars in Muslim countries, nay, I am not even talking about Muslim scholars in North America, but non-Muslim scholars in the departments of Islamic of Middle Eastern or Near Eastern studies in the USA or Canada--who peer-reviewed Spencer's work and recommended it.
A truly distinguished scholar on the subject in America is John Esposito.
Anyway, even if Spencer has some credentials, there is no reason for me or Khaleed to learn about Islam from him when we can do it from the original sources.

Give me some examples then of people who are proven bigots, that have had just as much airtime as Spencer, such as David Duke of the KKK.
Daniel Pipes is an American scholar on the Middle East....Daniel Pipes has said: "Robert Spencer and I have discussed the perceived differences in our view of Islam. He and I concluded that, although we have different emphases - he deals more with scriptures, I more with history - we have no disagreements."[4] He has also endorsed Spencer's books The Truth About Muhammad, and Onward Muslim Soldiers. (taken from Wikipedia)
I'm not saying for you to learn about Islam from Spencer. I haven't read any of his works. He doesn't agrue that Islam is a terrorist religion or that all Muslims are terrorists, he deals mostly with jihadist teachings and doctrines taken from the Koran. He esstenially states that more moderate Muslims need to stand up and oppose this interpretation of Islam.
