Definitely the world is facing the problem of climate change. We are scared by predicting future. Does situation is like that what we are thinking? Do you agree if somebody tells you that condition is improving and not to worry? Have you read a book named "The Skeptical Environmentalist" by Bjorn Lomborg? Put your views. shocked

I do agree that climate change is a serious threat to humanity, not to the Earth.

Apologists and ignorants might discard any piece of evidence as unsubstantial and ambigous claiming that smaple size of our data is not big enough or that programs and tehcnology used for evaluation of this effect is not precise enough.

But this doesn't change the fact that temperature patterns on differents parts of the world showcase the contrary.. One doesn't need to have a sample data from 100,000 years if one can merely check the data from the beginning of the Industrial revolution and see how much temperature went up and doing a little bit of simple analisys and simple arithmetics it isnt difficult to see where we are heading.

I haven't read that book but there is a book considered one of the best reasearched and easy to read even for non-specialists. It is called The Weather Makers by Tim Flannery. I highly recommend it.

Read and wake up...

hi,
with due respect to your reflections on the issue under quetion, i would like to add that "we are too stuck " with a world view which is so anthropocentric. it is very rightly observed that climate change shall affect not only humans but entire humanity as whole but if we peel our sense of ego and selfishness, we will find that we are ignoring the entire bio diversity which is far more rich both in its expanse and contribution to the entire evolution..we still are stuck with climate change and its impact on HUMANS AND HUMANITY..what about the entire ecosphere?..entire exhistence of the the present life forms? isnt our thinking to hierarchial?

Mr. Lomborg has long been the poster child of the "Do nothing" community. He has conceded that Global Warming is real and it is getting worse. He argues though that nothing we can do will stop it. To prove his "concern for humanity", he argues that many of the effects of Global Warming (rising seas, expansion of malarial zones, desertification, etc.) can be dealt with more cheaply by various bandaid approaches (build sea walls, distribute anti-malarial nets/drugs, re-forestation, etc.). He may be right that even if we do massive cuts in Co2 emissions, global warming won't stop any time soon.

I still don't think that's a good argument for complacency and doing nothing. Those bandaid approaches will all become inevitable, but we should still do everything in our power to reduce Co2 emissions, too. I have been replacing my incandescent lightbulbs with energy saving ones, I drive less, walk and bike more, I only shower every other three or so days to cut down on hot water use, I use a re-usable shopping bag, I turn off all stand-by appliances, etc. I am not going to stop, no matter what Lomborg says.

It was way below freezing today here in Hokkaido and I rode my Bike to work! No, Jenny, I haven't taken an environmental science class, but yes, I am interested in energy-efficient homes, appliances, cars, etc. I have seen a few "cube"-style energy efficient houses in the Internet. Sure are expensive, but I am sure they are the wave of the future.

hi,
what you are talking about is "sustainable lifestyle for sustainable development"..this is what Mahatma Gandhi sais some 70years back and it goes like this-"mother earth produces enough for mans need but not enough for his greed"....in the present context of globalisation which is driven by ultra consumerism, such realisation comes only after an age which is preceeded by indulgence.....i at times fail to gather as to why do humans (and this is strictly restricted to human behaviour) adopt a lifestyle which is so self destructive?..rest all of the worlds cearion follow the unwritten law of nature, thermodynamics and all that...the irony is that, we as humans have made the deepest inroads in understanding these phenomana but have done nothing to comply with while rest of the living forms have limited access to such scientific insight but a faar greater understanding of life and nature...we are doing injustice to all the life forms by behaving irresponsibily..a route to sustainable lifestyle is one of the most humble ways to undo the injustice we have done so far...we are chopping the very branch on which we sit.

rohitsaroj, I agree with everything you said. I worry that the sustainable level of consumption was back when the world's population was around one billion. The present day population is only maintained through massive abuse of the environment, using petroleum based fuels and fertilizers. The earth is swiftly losing arable land due to global warming. I worry about the future.
