Rebuilding Baghdad
May 20, 2003 - 02:35 AM

Although Saddam is gone, Baghdad and many other Iraqi cities are a mess. With gangs taking control of the streets and resources like water, electricity and food in short supply, how will the coalition regain control of, and rebuild Baghdad? How do you think that the world can help to rebuild a newly liberated Iraq?

Only thing is, the Security Council has effectively granted the US and Britain control of the country for the time being, and in the words of one analyst, once you taste imperialism it's hard to let go...

"control" or no control, the inability to provide security in terms of food, water and aid throughout the region necessitates further intervention. The bombs are no longer dropping and there are lines of outside aid agencies awaiting entrance when it becomes secure.
US and British control does not exclude a greater presence of UN personnel, which at a certain point I believe will be worthwhile to have.

i have trouble believing that stable, free, and democratic nations can be built from the outside. especially by countries that are not free or democratic themselves.

i think mikael is right in using the term "imperialism." the question is not how these other nations can build a "free" and "liberated" Iraq, because those are not the goals at this point. at least not the goals of the US or Britain. and though i was curt in my earliest reply, i do believe that for Iraq to be rebuilt in a way that is democratic, sustianable, and focused on its own citizens, the US and its lackeys would have to... well... not be there.

now, of course, that probably will not happen. so maybe the question becomes: how do people in Iraq and those of us elsewhere do everything we can to make sure that the best is made of a terrible situation?

The thing is, the Security Council also withdrew the sanctions against Iraq for the first time in a long time... which means that the US can sell Iraqi oil.

So, where is this money going?

right back to US corporations (whose boards are full of government officials and their family members). they were probably signing contracts before the bombing even started.

In fact, they were signing contracts before the war started for certain things, the links are in my updates.

Rebuilding
May 27, 2003 - 09:45 AM

This discussion is not about rebuilding the reputation of the United States in the UN. This discussion is on how the US and other countries can help to rebuild liberated Iraq.

1. Increase military police presence. increase cooperation with individual iraqis on personal levels. example: dissolving iraq's army without regard to severance or livlihood, when many members have no relationship with saddam is poor assistance.
2. Readmit UN officials, and aid agencies into iraq. There is no excuse why they lack presence at the moment. Facilitate the smooth operation of food and service aid to everday citizens.
3. Rapidly proceed to formalize iraq's civilian government, and promptly leave afterward.

Aid has been pledged, but cannot go far without domestic security in iraq. Effective policing, and community relations are necessary for this.

Capitalism
June 3, 2003 - 04:07 AM

The United States is a capitalist democracy. Therefore, we pay less money in taxes, and have less money in our federal budget. The shift in economy allows for corporations and private owners to retain more money.

So, where another nation might give aid directly from the government to Iraq, the United States provides incentives to corporations and businesses, encouraging them to invest in the rebuilding of Iraq's economy. This rebuilding bring more income to the country of Iraq, as well as its citizens, by creating new jobs and training new workers. This ultimately increases the living standards for all of the Iraqi people. It becomes a win-win situation for all involved, and that is the best type of situation for peace to grow.
