I agree that corporations should take on responsibily to be sustainable both enviromentally and socially. I think they should not exploit workers in developing countries, and the world should have standards on minimum wage (not in one currency form, but a percentage- say minimum wage should be equal based on what it can buy). I think its irrisponsible for these coorportations to think they are helping developing countries by erecting factories or other means of jobs, because really they are just looking for more profit by paying workers in other countries lower wages.

I understand that there are people who are very wary of corporate interference and would just as soon pay their fare on the TTC on nights like New Year's Eve when corporate sponsorship allows everyone to ride for free, but it does make sense if our governments are going to allow more privatization and more power in the hands of the corporations that they contribute in a very real and socially conscious way to the communities they've infiltrated. If there's a way to accept their support or donations without giving up all public control then it would be nice to see them give back to society instead of always taking away. The danger is creating that opening and allowing the foot in the door, setting boundaries at that point can become difficult.

I agree that Corporations are integral to community development, as they can provide a large amount of financial support and serve as role models. However there is, as Staci points out, a danger of a loss of public control. Corporations have their own agenda, and they primarily are a business which seeks profit. We must always critically analyze the corporate and non for profit relationship in order to prevent the commodification of international development. People's lives are not products to be exploited - we must maintain a respect for the human life and seek them as equal intelligent beings, with the capacity to contribute and manifest their own change and power.
