Does music define us?

Do you think music defines,
yourself?
our society?
our world?
our development?
our failures?
our achievements?
our lifestyle?
our environment?
I personally think that music defines who we are, with all our emotions and thoughts all bubbled inside ourselves. What does music define?

Personally, I think music doesn't define who we are, but instead lets us express ourselves. Even when we choose the kind of music we listen to, we express our priorities, feelings, points of view, personal characteristics and other things as well.

like was mentioned above, music is an expression of our spirit, our geist. other artforms (painting, dance, theatre etc) also serve the same purpose - to showcase what's true in ourselves.
music can "define" us in the eyes of others - but it doesn't really define us.

I don;t know if music defines everyone. I think that it can. I mean there are some people that use music to dictate thier lifestyle, like if they listen to rap or metal or punk. But there are a lot of people that listen to a whole bunch of different music. For example on my current playlist is Rascal Flatts, T.I., Lil Chris, Nizlopi, The Fray, The Arctic Monkeys, Eminem, Bell X1, Justin Timberlake and Matt Good.
I think that now it is harder to be defined by the music we listen to that before becuase we can just download songs that we want as opposed to having to buy full albums.

I think a big part of it also has to do with the kind of music you listen to... some genres are more instrumental than others in creating a sense of community, in inspiring the listeners to express themselves and in celebrating the work and vision of independent artists, who I think are ultimately an essential part of a society's public sphere.
Since my move to Toronto, I got immersed in the world of independnet music (particularly from Toronto and Montreal) and, surprisngly, I feel like I have learned a lot from it. I now value personal expression and independent arts a lot more, and in coming to appreciate this type of music I have found many friends who share my same passion. From indie music I slowly moved to other indie realms such as film and journalism, too, so I am still learning and exposing myself to new things.
Indie music reminded me that there is creativity out there, it has revitalized my idea of music by proving to me that not everything has to be about advertising, cross marketing and sales. The genre in itself, too is so varied that I got to listen (and love!) types of music I never would have been exposed to otherwise.
So yes, music is now a big part of my life, not the only one, but still a very important one!
