Dollar vs. Euro
October 7, 2007 - 04:09 AM

Dollar has been weakening ever since the inception of Euro. More and more central banks keep and buy their reserves in Euro. Although not claiming a victory over its rival yet, Euro steadily gains more ground.
What do you think will be the future of Euro and Dollar? Which will predominate? Or will it be Chinese yuan?

The Euro's gradual but consistent perforfance in the international currency market is indeed something to applaud, despite that it has its little problems.
I think the initiative is a very good one. So far, the Euro's performance has opened the eyes of other territories arround the world. For instance, West Africa has gone far in its bid to emulate the European example. I think sometime in 2008 or there abouts, the ECU (is this the name or something like this??) will start making its rounds, as a common currency for about 20nations or so.
Personally, I am of the opinion that the world should start thinking towards a common cyrrency, I have this belief that it will reduce a whole load of other problems. But then, since I am not an economist, I may be wrong.

I think it is interesting that the Euro is overtaking the US Dollar, and it makes me happier I guess because the Euro is more stable. I hope however that currienies stay independent to nations, I am not in favour of common currencies because I fear that this would further increase the power of international financial institutions and make politics even more subjected to the whims of international finance. I understand that there is a lot of instability right now and that is hurting the rich-poor gap, but I would rather see countries able to retain their autonomy.

Dollar is weaking. Euro is more valuable.
In the economic views, EU needs to worry about that. They can't export since their products cost higher, and domestic goods are less competitive. On the other hand, US economy is in recession, the weaker dollar creat the higher exports and reduce imports. Inflattion in US is now not a serious problem. Therefore, US take an advantage to recover its economy.
If it continute like it, maybe EU will be in a serious problem, thus "economic war" between US and EU may happen.

Dollar vs. Euro

We can't forget the rule of the "Sovereign Wealth Funds". They are 100% composed by dollars. The U.S. still have a enormous militar power and the world need a guarantee for its savings. Remmeber that we are not anymore at the Bretton Woods system era.

true very soon the the dollar will be very weak.and the american economy is feeling the pinch.that is why they will use every trick in the book to protect their interests. i heard one of the reasons they attacked iraq besides the need for oil was also Saddam was planning to quote his oil in Euro and this did not go down well with the americans who quickly moved in and topple him and replace him with a puppet regime.had saddam had gone ahead with his plans this would have spelt a doom on the dollar and the american economy would have sunk

IMHO, Dollar weakness causes are:
*US are financing wars in Iraq, Afghanistan etc printing money. It means US government needs money, but can't rise taxes, so it calls for new public debt that's bought by the FED printing new money. Creating new money create inflation and let gold prices go up.
*FED, is also printing money to save great banks. Remember that FED IS NOT TOTALLY PUBBLIC!
FED PARTNERS ARE ALSO GREAT BANKS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Reserve_System#cite_ref-0
*Dow Jones is falling down, so capitals flow away from US markets. Foreign Banks sell US shares and also sell dollars to have other currencies.
*As $ falls down, many states start to convert $ reserves into other currencies. Oil producing countries are asking euros for oil, so new reserves won't be any more in $

Yes, the value of dollar is decreasing day by day.
Firstly, I'd like to give a comment to the point that one of the reasons of attacking Iraq was that Iraq wanted to get money for oil in Euros not dollar is not reaonable since in that time dollar was pretty tough and there was no need to ask money in euro not dollar and one can say that it was political reason. No one would act with political reasons if it is unprofitable for economy if he is not stupid of course.
I don't think that only euro itslef will dominant itself, because US economy is so tough that it will (I think) quickly go out of problem, because it is not 1930s. Now there are a lot of elements to fight with depression, inflation and so on. So, the dominance of euro is short-term factor. In long-term, as my intuition says, the dollar will return its power and dominance.
