Energy and climate change
October 5, 2007 - 08:01 AM

Some part of the world, people are pleading to have constant power supply for development while some people are plugging appliances when they are not using them, and appliances consume energy even in stand by mode, and at the same time our world have even seems have out used much energy that it has started affecting our climate when power has not been completely distribute or shared to everyone... so what I'm saying is what will be the climate situation when maybe all in Africa and other part of the world start using adquate power supply and enough carbon emmission in the air?

Eventually the climate will be boiling like fire with much chemical gases in the air and less trees to support life...vividly why our world has to take it serious in combating climate change now.

It is absolutely essential that we take on climate change now and continue to do so with the 2050 target of reducing carbon dioxide emissions worldwide by a large percentage.

Africa has contributed the least to cause climate change but is already suffering from it and will suffer the most in the future.

If you think Africa will develop so much and use huge amounts of energy from sources that contribute to climate change, you may be mistaken. By the time Africa develops very significantly (i.e. the stage that carbon emissions become an issue for the continent), there will be very little oil or gas left and cleaner technologies will more readily available to harness energy.

Africa's oil and gas reserves are concentrated in the north and west. By contrast, virtually all of Africa's coal reserves are in the south. Geothermal resources are largely in the Red Sea Valley and the Rift Valley. Much of Africa is well exposed to sunlight -- solar energy could be particularly useful in areas far from national grids.

Although only one-third of coal produced in South Africa is exported, primarily to the European Union and East Asia , South Africa was the world’s third largest net coal exporter in 2002.

This is just to show that fossil fuel production and utilisation is abundant and will be increasing in future in the region. Environmentally safe technologies will not find their way any time soon in what concerns making effective and environmentally friendly energy consumption framework of Africa. Remember that other major greenhouse gases include methane (60 times more potent in capturing heat than CO2) and nitrous oxide (270 times more powerful in capturing heat than CO2). The agricultural basis of Africa gives methane lot of importance on a regional scale. The fact that lot of vegetation and trees are cut burnt together with large fields clearing, it becomes clear that Africa is not going to diminish niether in its or global contribution to atmoshperical warming of the Earth.
