one computer per child

I'm sure there are at least a few of you who have heard of the one computer per child program. Essentially what is involves is very cost efficient (costing $100) fully functioning laptops being sent into the developing world to help teach children there how to use technology.
Since the introduction of the program there has been a substansial amount of debate on the meritts of the program. On one side you have a large numberof people that feel that this will be a great tool for the children that will enhance thier education and provde them with the skills tha they will need to pull themselves out of poverty and into well-paying jobs in the future.
Other people point out security concerns (won't the kid just get it stolen), fear of misuse (being sold to help feed the family) or that we are skipping too many steps and that we shouldn't be concerned about providing laptops for people that can't write with a pen and pencil.
How do you feel about the one computer per child program?

Well , as a begining .. i just wanted to tell you that .. to make those children capable of using the laptops .. we have to acheive the MDGs first .. at least the universal primary education system .. if we really want those kids to use the laptops for something useful .. other wise .. they could use the technology without any consideration . to what were the reasons these laptops are there for them . so .. it will be misused . Thats from my point of view

For us inAfrica we thinkit is a very good initiative. But there could be some problemof making it available for the children in Africa, there could a price of $100 but before it reaches us on this side of the world it could be same price as other laptops, thereby making it insignificant to us on this side. I think what also needs to be done is to create a medium that will help our children in Africa have equal acess to these laptops at affordable prices.

I would like to know more about the program's components before making an assessment of it. How is this program sustainable? Is the laptop donated to the family? Are there on site field workers available to train the child receiving this laptop? What happens if the laptop breaks down? I think it's a great way to promote ICT4D, and the laptops can be used as tools to promote reading and writing, but there seem to be a lot of unanswered loopholes.

There unfortunately isn't a lot of decisive information about the program available other than what has been in news reports etc. The One Laptop Per Child Foundation website is fairly vague. Wikipedia has an entry on the program that seems to be even more in depth than the website and it also addresses some of the criticisms.

One computer per child is a very good and nice idea but the problem is that i don't think that could work in Africa. Africa educational sysytem is not all that good and corruption won't make the idea posible in Africa. If we can get rid of this corrupt and uselsss leader African will return home and enjoy themselves.

There is a growing recognition that even if the OLPC (as envisaged by Negroponte) doesn't succeed in a $100 laptop, it *has* forced the debate on making ICT available as a near-commodity resource.
Information and communication are probably the two most powerful forces at work in society today. From Zimbabwe, to Burma, to China, to New Orleans, governments can't hide from global citizens any more.
And by putting that access in the hands everyone (through OLPC, ClassMate, Pxiel Qi, Assus EEE, etc) then we further enable peoples everywhere to share and learn across the globe.
Of course, $100 on a clean drinking water project is probably better spent than on a single laptop, but that just throws the debate into even more stark relief. If we can build a wireless laptop for $100, why on earth are people dying because of dirty water?
