European youth project. Fighting extreme poverty in our everyday lives
September 21, 2007 - 01:07 PM

Hi,

We often say that young people don’t care about anything anymore and that they don’t want to implicate themselves in any struggles now days… Like many I think this is false and I’m happy to present to you a project of a group of young Europeans who travel all over Europe to listen and try to discover how people are fighting against extreme poverty in their everyday lives.

This project was initiated by the NGO The Fourth World Movement and the point is to meet people who live in situations of extreme poverty and exclusion and listen to them and help them be actors of change.

This caravan left on the 2nd of June and has travelled in many different European countries.

The Caravan is now in France after having spent 2 incredible weeks in Poland. Here is the story of one magical encounter in Strzelce-Opolskie

Before the caravan had also been to London in England :

You can also see the video that makes the link between Poland and the difficulties of Polish are now living in England.

The caravan was furthermore in Strasbourg in the east of France where we saw the importance of the “second encounter”…

Anyways all that to say I really recommend checking out their website : www.caravanes-atd.eu

What’s really cool in this project is that it’s a way to connect young people from a lot of different European countries and try to make them build new projects together. I think this can really be the beginning of something. So don’t hesitate to react and tell me what you think about this project.

Hope to here from you soon,

Tomdom

I forgot something....

On a more “philosophical level” we could say that the guiding principle of this project is “to meet people and to share something with the people we encounter”. Yet on first inspection, nothing can seem more self evident and obvious, because, of course, whatever we do we are going to be meeting people. But to what end, for what purpose, to achieve what?
The answer is, there are no other ends. That’s it.

That is what is so special about this project. We do not assume meeting with people to be merely a straightforward and inevitable process that sets the stage for grander actions, such as eradicating poverty and establishing human rights.

Meeting people and sharing things with them, be it a simple conversation, a game of football, playing music together, dancing, painting, discussing or whatever, is, we are slowly coming to see, the beginning and the end. Of course, even we are not naive and idealistic enough to think that changing the world is quite as simple as that. But increasingly we are being compelled to see that the stuggles such as changing social structures and policies, which seemingly go beyond seeing the human being in everyone, be they a politician or a person living in poverty, are really, essentially, only details.
For our journey that began on the 2nd of June continues to prove to us that if do not better learn how to be with each other and share things together, then all of our hopes and dreams about creating a more equal, more just, more free society, will dissipate through our fingers and away into the night air…

Hope to here from you soon,

Tomdom

Well I really think this is an awesome project. You are right. They need not go to these places in the guise of a grand purpose. In fact, listening to their fellow youths alone can make them realize many things such as the different challenges and concerns being faced by them. This will lead to a broader and greater understanding of the very core of the world's problems.

Anyway, are these travels funded by an organization? Or do they spend their own money? Just wondering. =)
