[Poll] Bad Youth Programs
May 15, 2003 - 01:58 AM

Throughout my work as a young person and with young people I've experienced a lot of BAD youth programs, both as a participant and as a staff member. So many that I started a website to promote what I think are good youth programs. But I'm starting to wonder what other people are thinking about youth programs.
So what do YOU think are bad youth programs? Or is there any such thing? Is any youth program better than NO youth program?
I'd really like to hear what's on your mind about this.
Is there such a thing as a "bad" youth program?
Definitely. Some rock, some suck, and some are in between.
(0 votes for 0%)
No way! Any youth program is better than no youth program!
(9 votes for 81.82%)
Maybe... but I'm not sure.

The middle aged woman standing at the front of the room had lost them. She'd started well, getting the year 9 boys active and involved in the icebreaker. Sitting them back down she proceeded to face the whiteboard and write, turning away from the group. She heard murmurs, yet continued to write. Finally turning around again, she removed a neatly folded sheet of paper from her pocket and read, verbatim, from the sheet.
And I'm not kidding.
Programs can engage young people and change their lives for the better, or they can turn them away from thinking for the rest of their lives. I think an awful lot of damage has been done by people who run programs badly, so I'd definitely prefer to see no program in some cases.

Some youth programs especially those for the rehab of street children can be more destructive than we can imagine.
The supervisors are of no experience and appropriate education and regard those children as "bad" people who must be excluded from the community!
These children actually prefer the life on the streets than being hit and tortured in those centres!

I think that its important to state that I don't neccesarily mean to oversimplify the word "bad".
We've all had negative experiences, and I'm just trying to cyfer out whether those experiences are worth the learning, particularly as it applies to youth programs.
