Branding AIDS conference and related articles
August 28, 2007 - 02:24 PM

I'm really looking forward to attending the Branding AIDS conference because most of what I read in the mainstream media takes a simplistic view of corporate sponsership - they're either very cynical and condemning or they're very accepting and congratulatory.

There's an event group for the conference on facebook and some members posted Canadian articles which illustrate what I mean:

A scathing CBC article. They've also published reader's letters so at least there is some "discussion" going on.

A more superficial, but even handed article from the Toronto Star

Anyone read anything more in depth and perhaps, less partisan in the mainstream news?

Great links - the CBC one is a great example of how people sometimes miss the big picture by focusing on all of the negatives

In the instance of the Red campaign, yes, the money spent may be better served at vaccine delivery, awareness campaigns or a host of other directly applicable programs/services.

But I've also heard the argument that bringing an issue like HIV/AIDS into the realm of shopping will only bring benefits: more people are informed (albeit superficially) of the problems at hand and the potential solutions available.

Ultimately, it's up to the individual to decide how to act. Corporations making nice may certainly influence a decision, but the individual still has to make that choice.

I recently starting looking into AIDS education due to starting my new job for the Global Learning Group and the article that was posted on http://www.globalur.com. I am now very interested in the issue and have presented several Red for Africa ideas at my school and in my community. If any one has any suggests on how I can help out or I would love to hear how the conference went. Please reply to this post!
