What is Business? I see business as any activity that productively occupies your mind, body, and spirit. That is, any productive act that keeps your entire being BUSY is business. Sitting on one spot and praying for the heavens to drop apples is MASQUERADE BUSINESS in disguise, because idleness is not productive in nature it is not business by nature. IDLENESS IS NO BUSINESS. Having successfully defined BUSINESS, what then is information?
A piece or set of idea(s) that are real or imagined can be defined as information. Irrespective of the form the idea is taking (figures, letters, images or sound), information is an intelligence unit. Information is not something that you know before you go on a fact finding mission, it is something that you find after systematic searching and analysis of raw data before you eyes and conscious mind. Information is an answer to a question, a solution to a problem, and light to darkness.
INFORMATION HAS NUTRITIONAL VALUE IN BUSINESS GROWTH. It is an ingredient much needed for business to actually live, breath and experience posterity. The life of every business cells and nerves depends on relevant, accurate, timely, and evident-based business information, just as bio-organic cells depends on oxygen to live.
In my researches as a business development consultant, I have come to the persuasive conclusion, that businessmen are destroyed for lack information. It is true that insufficient capital can paralyses a business, but nothing really DEFORMS A BUSINESS ENTITY AS LACK OF INFORMATION. Without a clear-cut definition of his vision and mission in the hyper-competitive marketplace, how far do you think a businessman can go? He may have all the business capital, and locate his business(es) in the federal capital of America or Japan. But, if his business is void of juicy information, his competitors with these much sort after information will scheme him out of the business world or force him to change to another industry were he has little or no experience. So it is then clear that information has a central and germane role, and place in the business development in the 21st century business world. Now the issue is, what is the place of information in business?
The place of information in business is essentially twofold;
(1). Information will help your business to BE STRONG.
(2). Information will help your business to DO EXPLOITS.
The strength of any organization is determined by the pool of RELEVANT, ACCURATE, TIMELY, AND EVIDENT-BASED BUSINESS INFORMATION available to all the various levels of management of that particular enterprise. When all the supervisors have operational information, all the managers has tactical information and the directors all has strategic information, I do not see how the entire business can experience business wreckage. The cheapest way to distance yourself from business failure is to do something outstanding and usual with the information available to you per time.
I always tell my business friends and partners that, "NOTHING HUMBLES OPPOSITIONS LIKE RESULTS". Repeated and sustained successes in business are at the mercy of information. Exploit in business depends on the business insights and foresights of the business leaders, owners, managers, directors, and their business think-tank. People with knowledge of sound business principles and practices, when they appropriately apply these business insights drawn from the treasure house of discoveries will always succeed beyond measures. All exploits in business is some secret business information at work.
It is worthy to know at this time, that the information age is well over 30 years old. The business world has experienced two ages; The Agricultural Age, and The Industrial Age. In the agricultural age, men were working with their hands to achieve speedy results in business, but during the industrial age, machines took over the hands of men. Many craftsmen lost their jobs and relevance during the industrial age. In this information age we have seen the MINDS OF MEN replacing machines. I have repeatedly said in many gatherings, "NOTHING ENRICHES THE MIND LIKE INFORMATION". Rich minds are more productive in volume and value than a rich machine. A business associate of mine, Rev. Jolly Igbinosa made a profound statement, he said, "MENTAL-CRAFT IS FASTER THAN AIRCRAFT". Think about that, that means the speed it will take the mind to get to America and come back is faster than the speed of an airplane.
See what an Idea did for Michael Dell of Dell Computers, in 1984 as a 19 years university freshman, Michael Dell had an idea. He asked himself a business question, "why not sell custom-made computers to customers?" And as he begins to clothe his idea with relevant information in the direction of his dream, his financial destiny came alive. Today his company is still trading with the same idea and that idea now brings in an income of 19,000,000,000 dollars every year and that same idea provides employment for over 25,000 people. His company was one of the very first to sell computer on the internet. In July 1996, when Dell offered online purchasing. Even with no promotion or advertisement, the site began selling 30 to 50 computers a day. By the late 1990's, his company was selling an average of 18 million dollars a day online. You can see that when business information is used effectively in business, the financial picture of the business takes on new colours. Another information merchant is Bill Gates of Microsoft Corporation. Mr. Gates is today the richest mortal man alive, he too like Dell is well informed about the place of information in the 21st business, hence he is always on the look out for every piece of information that can move him from where he is to where he ought to be according to his business plan.
Let me briefly make mention of other places you can see information occupying in the business of the 21st century.
(1). Information is A DEFENCE in business. The information available to a sane man is the reason for all his actions. If businessmen are destroyed for lack of information, then if he has these information he now has a wall of defense around himself and his business. I would like to believe that "INFORMATION IS THE REASON FOR ALL BEHAVIOURS, AND MISINFORMATION IS THE REASON FOR ALL MISBEHAVIOURS". Every genuine freedom in the business world is traceable to true information.
(2). Information is A LIFEJACKET for businessmen and A LIFEBOAT for every sinking business.
(3). Information is A PROFITABLE COMPASS charting for business direction.
(4). Information is THE PRINCIPAL THING in the information age. A self acclaimed wise man without information is a fool in disguise. Wisdom is having the information about what you intend to do, how to do it, where to do it, why you are doing it, and who and what can help you get the expected results. A businessman without this principal thing will suffer the loss of his principal capital in business. It is one thing to have an idea for a profitable business, it is another thing all together to have the information on how to development this business idea.
There is no doubt that business development is at the mercy of RELEVANT, ACCURATE, TIMELY, AND EVIDENT-BASED BUSINESS INFORMATION. A powerful strategy makes a powerful competitor. In today's hyercompetitive marketplace, a business must be a powerful competitor to survive. Without information, you cannot design and develop an effective business strategy. Gather business information that are inline with your business vision, mission, goals, and objectives.
There are three things about information I would like to leave with you;
1. INFORMATION IS BETTER THAN STRENGTH.
2. INFORMATION IS BETTER THAN WEAPONS OF WAR.
3. INFORMATION ANSWERS ALL THINGS.
