Water Purification Systems
May 8, 2003 - 09:30 AM

Our grade 8 class is doing a project on designing various plans to teach and implement safe, efficient and creative ways in which young people can use water to change their communitities. The students in our class will esearch a separate Water Activity. These activities are:
-Low cost Water Purification
-Low cost water pumps
-Water based medical solutions and formulas
-Low cost water irrigation methods
Students are allowed to you the internet to find information, they will also be allowed to use TakingITGlowbal.org- where they will consult the PROJECTS area and the discussion boards to enquire as to what has alread been done in this field and who they may contact for more information. This will be the research component fo their assignment.

If you're interested, I did a study on the effect of direct exposure to solar radiation on bacteria present in drinking water. A summary of what I found is simply this: water exposed to direct sunlight for a period of several hours contains far less bacteria than water kept in the dark. Something interesting to keep in mind when discussing low-cost ways of purifying water.
