Africa would only develope if her leaders decide to shun corruption and sit - tight attitude when elected into office. This is because corruption and sit - tight attitude slows down development and prevents transparency.

In Nigeria for instance, the high rate of corruption being practiced in all arms of the government is what is slowing down the power sector. Knowing fully well that the power sector is the energy that fuels developmental activities, especially in manufacturing businesses. No business can survive in Nigeria or elsewhere without adequate power supply. Another instance is when the government of Former President Olusegun Obasanjo claimed it spent over 300billion naira on roads, yet the roads are still in deplorable conditions.

It is honestly that Afriac is still were she is today because of this leaders who have made corruption their surnames.

Hello everyone,

I am Airin from Bangladesh. If the major Millenium Development Goal of reducing poverty by half by the year 2015 is to be achieved in Africa, a major policy shift is required, both at the national and international levels, to help boost growth & development in Africa. Minimizing corruption, free access to education, investment in HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria, water supply & proper sanitation are required for more effective and efficient action on the ground in Africa to save lives, enhance quality of life and create conducive environment for Africans to reach their full potential.
Thanks
Airin

sad my people perish for lack of knowledge, information will save africa.
if only our people know the right things at the right time, most of the mistakes our Africa people make, will not be made. This is not just about university education, this is more than that, this is global awakening education. As we all know thereare so many things that are taught in local schools that need to be taught. if don't teach you find a way to teach yourself. AFRICAN NEED MORE USE OF THE INTERNET! I said so.

I hear people are saying Africans has the resources yeah right we do have the them BUT THE QUESTION IS WHO OWNS THE RESOURCES AND CONTROLLING THEM? Do i have to give a history lecture here. Africa is being exploited by the imperialists and we will continue to suffer.
We need to conrol the means of production and our people need to be empowered.
Did you know that one of the so called dictators of Africa Mugabe was a darling of the West to the extent of being knighted KCB level by the Queen when he preached the gospel of reconciliation before he took the path of taking back the land and trying to correct the historical imbalances.
http://www.herald.co.zw/inside.aspx?sectid=33717&cat=10
Education is important very crucial in the process of development but we need education that empowers people to be master of their own destiny employers not employees. We need a generation of leaders that will not be puppets, corrupt or any of those social ills.
I for one will say lets start by correcting the historical imbalances when it comes to our resources and move forward.

I rest my case

African Nations would only develope if they begin to look in...through practices of reforms that are perculiar to them. Borrowed Policies of IMF, World Bank and the likes would only help Africa get more deep into Neo-colonialism

Africa has the resources yeah right but who owns and controls those resources?
For Africa to develop we need homegrow solutions not some experiments like that thesis called ESAP which was prescribed to us.We need to control the means the means of production and land is one such.
We need a leadership which has spine to stand up for us and not the likes of Savimbi in Angola,Dhlakama in Moza who were used to destablise their couontries for the West.We also need to fight this animal called imperialism and neocolonialism. In Zimbabwe i have im have seen that we can not separate politics and economics so we need political leaders who are principled and who can defend their nation's sovereignity. Most African countries gain political independence but not economic independence we need NOT to depend so much on donors this cripples the mind of the people that they will not work for themselves to improve their livelihood and depend on handouts. Why wait for foreigners to come and exploite our resources and have them benefit from the and not us? We need to have control of our destinies.

Africa is a continent that has been endowed with plenty of resources. The colonialist exploted the continent's minerals and today the same is still taking places. However what amazes me is that Africa has still failed to utilize its resources and instead many graduates are opting to go outside Africa to seek for greener pastures. What could be the problem? Africans should learn to accept that they are Africans. It all starts from here. We are black and not white. Seeking to be white has led to many of us failing in life. Our education system is white, the dress codes, the movies we see, the language we speak,. We have little time to admire our heritage. When someone tries to be African, he is seen as outdated and primitive. This must stop. Development begins by Africans appreciating their identity.

If anyone is a teacher or a college tutor, and would like to discuss this question as part of an education project, please register at http://www.globalgateway.org as we have a lot of schools in the UK that are interested in supporting education for development.

See the statement from the UK Government for schools in the UK.

I would also like to ask who agrees with the statement of Julius Nyerere that for every penny spent on aid to Africa, keep it and spend it educating your children in the West on the causes of poverty in Africa.

I have always found this statement very interesting and would like to know if it is still up to date, or out of date!

Increasing access to quality education is essential to future progress, but increasing access to quality health care must go hand in hand. Childhood mortality remains high because of untreated preventable diseases. The children who survive are left without parents who dies of AIDS-related complications, tuberculosis or other diseases. The HIV epidemic has left behind a younger population that is and will continue to make up the majority of the workforce that will drive the economic recovery necessary for development.

Rubbish!! I believe that if we dont point fingers and ask critical questions we stand to lose our moral right to be heard. Presidents like Uncle bob and his partner in crime Mr Mbeki are a shame to the integrity of our continent. "Give me freedom or show me death" ...

Pointing fingers does not help the people that need access to services now. Yes for future progress it will be necessary to get rid of corrupt leaders. Right now, there are several urgent needs that have to be addressed along with consideration of long-term plans.

Hello Mrs Mason

Being born and raised in a continent plagued with war, famine, disease and adverse poverty but yet filled with immense mineral resources (riches) certainly adds to the anger one might feel towards his leaders. In my case I am lucky to have been born in a country that has never seen the whip of war and dire hunger... You mentioned that for future progress it is necessary to remove corrupt leaders. I commend you for your observation. However, I feel you do not have an inkling of knowledge in reagrd to African affairs.

My dear girl, Africa's problems have killed many a people and it is important to acknowledge that it is not an inevitable part of our way of life but rather a failure of leadership and imagination from African Heads of State. The future is determined by the actions we take today and not tommorrow, hence I find it hilarious for you to say that corrupt leaders should be removed in the future. I wholeheartedly believe that what Africa needs is a continental vision for transformation. We need to change our education sytem that is geared at producing employees to focus on producing entrepreneurs and investors. We need to empower young people through technolgy and technical skills that can be used to compete in todays ever changing and competitive world. More importantly, Africans need to wake up to the realisation that the rules have changed. We are indeed living in the Information Age. You no longer need to be the son of a chief or member of parliament to have a voice and proactively make a positive financial change in your life. In conclusion Vanessa, African needs to form partnerships with emerging markets eg Brazil, Russia, India, China etc to better position our continent to benefit from the economic boom in these countries. I vehemently support the notion that Mandarin should be taught and made compulsory in African schools. It should be made a core subject like English and Maths.

extract from last message.

I am sure you're wondering what in the world is this dude blabbing about. The crux of my argument Miss Mason is that all changes have to be given a thumbs up by leaders. Without innitiative and action we will undoubtably become a continent of whiners and talkers. It is my contention that before transformative change comes, Africans need to shout, whale and rebel against the dying of the light.
