Thanks for raising this question which always is my interest. I believe if all of us as Africans get down to work without having to remain pointing fingers. Our countries are ours and we have to be part of their destiny if we want to develop.

I think there are some things needed for African countries to develop:
- Good governance (no corruption, no tribalism
- Educated Africans need to take responsibility of their countries and be pro-active instead of just being aided by foreign aid
- Some sort of a mentality change

We should not forget security which will invite in investors than our own poeple instead investing outside because of lack of security.
Secondly we should not see poverty as a problem or blocking stone to this development we want, because if people are working/imployed will be the only workable way to eradication of poverty. Our governments are not doing enough to provide avanues where people can work and get their daily breads, I can say that most of the investment in Africa are almost by individuals endeavor, eg Nigeria etc. So our governments should build companies, factories and provide contractors for farming and not lodging funds in foriegn accounts while we are crying out for development when most of our funds are developing other nations, providing free education etc.
Thirdly, every child in Africa must have free acces to education, they are not even asking for pocket money. Personally this particular issue has been sounding in my ear almost from the day of my birth to now yet nothing has been done about it and we want development to fall from the sky....in USA, Europe etc internet access are free for students but here in Africa all our earns goes to browsing, in Nigeria one hour acess to internet is 120.00 Naria equvanlent to $7, hmm some people are living below a dollar per day UN said.
We have been so much acquaintance with no electricity we want power to carry on our daily activities, a baber needs electricity to shave customers likwise a welder needs electricity to weld, soldering, and brazing irons together, etc...electricity is very important in developments.
War , bad leadership, embesseling of public funds, tribalisim, ill politices, corruption etc are also agent of undeveloping which Africans must get ride of to face reality .

I think Africans will develop as they are doing now, when many conditions are met. As an individual, every one has four needs like physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual. When living as others, the individual extends to community and institutions. The harmonious interaction of such ingredients is not easy, no country in the world accomplished for all live under trial; and we call few countries as developed, since they accomplished the above in better way. In fact the synergism of the interaction of the above mentioned will create A CAUSE none can befittingly tell and explain.
As Africans every one is asked to make a difference first thru vision and dreams, then thoughts to change one self, and making positive contribution to self, to th eperson next to self an helping institutions to grow and telling them their mistakes and what we feel about the. Creating tolerance and understanding, to reach the visoion we all want tto create help us to develop. Every thing starts from an individual, level, then the rest will be detail where professionals and experts may try.
May God help us to have a better life in the Future.
Thanks,
Dereje

Its good as a youth we have seen the habit of our leaders, let us try not to emulate their attitude when we grow to take positions.
Sooner we shall be in various positions and we should remember we will be in for the whole and not ourselves alone.

On this topic, so many arguements have been raised and so many opinions traded. I beg to disagree with most.
In issues of lack of development in Africa, most of us are quick to point acusing fingers, to our LEADERS but are they to blame alone for our present conditions? I say a capital NO!
Agreed, most African nations have lots and loads of material and human resources, that ordinarily should be used to transform the way of life of the people.
Also agreed, that majority of the leaders we have had in the past are either corrupt, careless, selfish, unfocused or are a combination of all the above in certain propotions.
Now let us each ask ourselves this little question: how have I contributed in making the situation better in my country? Have we forgotten, that we are each leaders in our own little ways?
Fine, the place is all dirty. So, when was the last time you disposed of refuse properly? Ok, the traffic warden is corrupt. How many of us have all the necessary papers that gives us the entitlement to be on the road? well..?
The power is not regular..? The water supply is not good..? The education system is all too archaic..? I can ask each and every one of us a question in respect of any issue and believe me, we are not exonorated from blame.
Now look at the way society even values a corrupt government official. He receives traditional titles and university honourary degrees!! where are our values??
Unless and until we collectively agree that each and every one of us has a stake and therefore begin to do something, at least something positive, then I bet you, 10 generations from now the same issue will continue to feature in discussions, we ill continue to point acusing fingers.
One thing people seem to forget about pointing an acusing finger is that each time you point "one accusing finger, the remaining four of your fingers are pointing back at you!"
I have had enough of that kind of talk. Its time for action. HEY! DONT THROW THAT EMPTY CAN ON THE HIGHWAY, LOOK FOR A DUSTBIN, WILL YOU??

"One thing people seem to forget about pointing an acusing finger is that each time you point "one accusing finger, the remaining four of your fingers are pointing back at you!"
This is what most leaders wants majority want to do. Though seeing good sde always is very productive, if there are many people who want to take advantage of such good conducts as weaknesses to promote their own selfish interest and do many nefarious act against the majority, one may need to be forced to apply wisdom here. You point with five fingers so that none of them come to you.
The other thing is that if a plane crashes, is it the passengers who are responsible or the captains or the ground technicians. The passengers fault might be being on the wrong plane, but the rest goes to the others.
Africa's problem as indicated is good governance, which is coming up and showing good hopes in few countries.
Although the problems in Africa are many and complicated, it needs concerted efforts f every one in the world to edradicate those complications.
Great,
Dereje

One thing convincely is that Africans are not poor nor small in any aspect and development is a process, let us hope things will be better as we work hard and believe "He who laugh last laugh the best".
Again we should not fold our arms or keep only debating and discussing this issue with other continent without getting down to work ourselves. Believe you me, if all of Africans here in TIG will keep the drive we will make it. God bless Africa

Many are the things which have been done to developing African countries. But I am of the view that we can only develop as Africans if we put aside disunity. If we are not united as a country there is no way we can grow. Development agenda must be approached with a united front in spite of political interest.
Our leaders should also focus on the human resource development of the youth. The youth should also take it upon them selves to help in th growth of the African country. There should be commitment, diligence, hardworking etc in our quest to develop our countries in Africa.

For african countries to develop, Gouvernments should focus all their energies on education. They must understand that education is the only way for them to lay the foundations of a futur society that will be able to face the challenges of a permanently changing world. Whatever problem we face today in africa is connected to education. If people were adequatly educated, conrruption, wars and poverty, would not be so present in africa. I do believe in the magic of education as the key to the problem of africa and I pray that our leaders also understand things this way.

I think this question will be answered when the Society redirect their priority from: respecting "Paper certificate" intead of "functional Ediucation". When society will Honour "good Character" instead of "Riches". And when the government will bring Justice above Injustice.

I have been quiet for a while but this particular question has challenge. I feel I should write for out consumption. African development will start with Africans, through innovations started by Africans, owned, managed and sustained by them. It is not until the Africans realized the potential they posses that they will develop. We Africans we are great resource, Africa is endowed with a lot of resources, however the challenge is the focus on out side potential and ignoring the potential we posses. If Africans can start innovations on their own it will be very certain that these innovations will be sustained. African representation has often been full of hunger, blame, anxiety among others we have felt like some one is responsible for our problems. the thinking should shift and focus on the positive attributes we posses as African. The orientation we give to our children should change, not to teach them how to beg but working to earn. then we will have a proper generation. Another challenge has often been talking and not acting, responsibility should start with an individual and later the family and society. If you and me can change our attitude I tell you the future will be bright.

hello! I am a student to Canterbury Christ Church University and I'm doing a project at school! It's about access to,experiences with, and attitudes towards, digital technology such as computers
and the Web. There are lots of countries that face the technology problem, countries with low diffusion of information and communication. If anyone is from one of these countries and live in London or in cities next to Canterbury I would like to ask him/her a big favour....to let me take him a short interview about this...Or people who are not living in England can answer me on the e-mail.Please if someone could help. We live in a mad world....just say it all and someone will hear you!

Hello all TIG members especially those who contribute to this topic.
i'm not going to blame any one but my concern is that African countries have complex problems and for that MDGs are not their priorities given many ethnic conflicts, political instabilty in many countries like Kenya, DR Congo, Zimbabwe we're experiencing so it seems that our leaders and theirr oppositions have other ambitions rather than look to the welfare of their people.
Thanx
