Youth Mental Health on the Net
August 15, 2007 - 02:53 PM

Hi Everyone,
My name is Jen and I am currently doing my PhD in Clinical Psychology. I have begun researching the ways in which the internet has contributed to improving the mental health of youth all over the world (i.e., improved self-esteem, help with disorders, empowerment). It could happen in many different ways, such as through this site, facebook groups, counselling over the net, etc.). This is a very preliminary idea, but if anyone has thoughts or ideas related to this I'd love to hear from you!!
Thanks,
Jen

I like mindyourmind.ca which has interesting activities for young people... which I'm sure you've already heard of.

I would also love to explore ways to link young people around mental health issues as I think it is hard for isolated communities to meet other people with similar experience. For me, I love the internet and would love to see a network created to link youths from diverse experience with social welfare.

Please keep us posted on your work so we can prove this would be useful.

This is a great idea for research! The internet has become so widespread and its effects have only been skimmed. For a social tool such as Facebook, it has even reached developing countries. It is odd how much more time we are spending in online communities. I think internet can be socially positive IF there is a potential for future human contact. In addition, when we create personal profiles, we have the flexibility to uplift our self-images through a writing modem such as autobiography. I do think, however with for example Facebook, there are potentially more negative than positive effects (e.g., online bullying has become an issue in schools within Ontario).

Hi Jen

I personally think that it is a great idea. I suffered with depression and was admitted as a patient suffering from an acute breakdown. I suffered for a period of 10 years before I had my "break through".

The beauty of the internet as a facility to provide support is a wonderful idea because it enables the person requiring the support to be where they want to be and not in some sterile clinic or in some comfy chair - somewhere other than home or where they are comfortable. Most people I have talked to prefer to be at home and get strong and well.

From personal experience. I got through by not accepting what the doctors wanted to label me with. I didn't understand the labels therefore my belief was only that I would get well and I would not depend upon medication to create some steady platform to live on.

I was in hospital for 4 weeks. Acute care for 2 of those weeks.

Empathy and Empowerment is the answer. If we can get our heads together and provide this for anyone who "wants".

I connected with many people whilst at home recovering. Most of a young age. I found sharing my vulnerabilities with others and my personal experiences in life - without judgement - made a huge impact. I could offer and they could benefit - it was a give - give situation. It is a passion of mine to see this happen. Individuals need empathetic role models who have been there and have had the experience in life. And most of all - recovered.

I am a Mum so my Interest is in the future - the youth.

All the Best
Sharon

The internet enables people to talk anonimously thereby facilitating informal conversations. That's the best way 4 a person 2 express themselves without scrunity.
