[Poll] Can music change the world?(part 1)
August 15, 2007 - 12:11 AM

#1:A non-stop trend.
The oldest protest song of showbiz 's history is the song called "the cutty wren" in 1381.in 19th century, protest songs didn't develop much.from 1960 with the event:Vietnam war, this music trend developed very strongly. The most famous artists of this period are BOB DYLAN,JOHN LENNON etc.in 1985,MICHAEL JACKSON and over 20 artists sang "we are the world" with message"heal the world and stop prejudice"it has changed showbiz.$50 million of "we are the world" shows was sent to the poor. The next albums of MICHAEL JACKSON still brought message and widen topic stick out tonguerotect the environment,war... then this trend has temporary down to teenpop music trend up.until the september 11th envent, this trend exploded again.alot of song was composed for the september 11th ,"America:a tribute to hero" show with charity purpose to help the victim, album "under attack"by LINKIN PARK,"the rising"by BRUCE SPRINGTEENS... brought this trend back.
in 2003, 10 days before Iraq war,DIXIE CHICKS shocked american community with their speech :"we're ashamed for same hometown-texas with Mr.president".Newspapers've written so much about this speech & it made other artists who have same thinking as DIXIE CHICKS ,can't silent.in 2004,the new album of GREENDAY shocked everyone with named"american idiot" it's an awl pointed at president G.BUSH,with strong feelings of GreenDay after the September 11th event and the way Bush run the country. The second single "wake me up when September ends" became hit.2 months later,MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE have same point with GREENDAY.before that, "i'm not okey "and"helena"are the songs don't have anything about gun, war...Suddenly,"the ghost of you"the 3rd single of MCR have the image of soldiers in war.and in MV of its, antiwar spirit was emphasized with dark-grey colors in every scenes.in july of taht year, LIVE 8 was organized with the response in over the world. There're over 1000 artists participated in Live 8,and it has broadcast on over 182 television progammes and 2000 000 radio in the world.35 000 tickets has been sold out in 20 minutes in 2 days,Live 8 got 25 billion $ to solve famine and HIV/AIDS in africa."the saint are coming" is the cooperation between BONO &GREENDAY.the image of MV is gun, war, natural calamity...and then it's end with sentence "not as seen on TV".in december, PINK published "dear mr president" in UK and EuropeAt thatt moment, "no too late" by NORAH JONES talked to G.Bush by jazz. recently,LINKIN PARK &single "what i've done" which full of antiwar spirit

#2:A music type not for weak artists
after their speech,DIXIE CHICKS started get bad consequence.all radio stopped playing DIXIE CHICKS's songs, disc stores stopped selling CDs of this group.Over 15 000 tickets of "top of the world tour"in carolina was sent back.some people called DIXIE CHICKS is "3 stupid hen"they painted the door of this group's house and threaten DIXIE CHICKS to apology Mr president Bush and american community for saying sch a thing. But MAINES,who talked taht sentence, has resisted :"ok,i'll say sorry as you want. But i'll not change my mind and my demeanor" and in the newest album"taking the long way", they composed some songs like"not ready to make nice" to prove their point .or like BONO was searched his house and he was interrogated in many hours.coz government suspected BONO embezzled donate money."they can't find anything ,coz it's not truth"BONO said in Entertainment magazine.
in this modern world,we can liberty to speech, but in showbiz's world,we can't sing whatever we think.it's ok with topics about environment, but when a song talk about policitics,race,war... most people will boycott it.so singles or albums talk so much about those topics will failure."dear mr president" by PINK has been forbidden circulate clips ( it replaces by liveshow image) and limit play on radio.or "gold digger"by KANYE WEST with lyrics" George Bush doen't care about black people" has got the same consequence, now it only circulate in secret on net.there's only "american idiot" and its single was succeed .
besides, many people disclaimed what artists've done.they thought artists used songs to earn money for themselves,it's not have any value.like King Of Pop MICHAEL JACKSON with "black or white" has been spoken ironically"black or white is the hesitation of MJ for keep his natural complexion or change to white".or when DIXIE CHICKS won in grammy, they have been rumor that examination commission taken pity on them.
we can see the less risk method is talk but not directly.for instance,"where is the love?"by BLACK EYED PEAS.it's also open with some image of war,but their lyrics and melody didn't make listeners (and censors) feel annoyed (or anxious?) they can send antiwar message easily
#3: there's no ends
obviously, artists like DIXIE CHICKS,GREENDAY,BONO,LINKIN PARK...will never stop pursuing their purpose: make a better world.they proved that music can change the world

I think that change has to be lead by music - our politicians are failing us so it is up to the artists to lead the generation.

I believe there's one special example missing - Bob Marley & The Wailers. The message of his songs was spread all around the world, and I believe their music generated a lot of changes, especially in Jamaica.

well, there are many. Personally, Nueva canción - protest song movement in Latin America - makes a big impression to me. Check out Victor Jara.

Here's a short description of the movement from Wikipedia:
Nueva Canción (Spanish for 'new song') is a movement in Latin American music that was developed first in the Southern Cone of South America - Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay - during the 1950's and 1960's, but also popularized shortly after in Central America. It combined traditional Latin American folk music idioms and some had popular rock music, with progressive and often politicized lyrics. Its lyrics charactaristically talk about poverty, empowerment, imperialism, democracy, human rights, and religion.

Any music that spreads the message that war is not okay is just fine....
But then again I live in a country which, as a whole is very anti- war
In my personal opinion I believe that pinks song "Dear Mr President" is an amazing anti war song
She has a large audience that listens to her music and she knows how to get the point across
I've been lucky enough to see her live big grin
She’s so totally AMAZING
But as I said at the start I will continue to support any artist who stands for what is right
Peace Out smile

Music brings people togheter. This sentence tells how much music really means to us, and how it can change the world. People come together to listen to the same music.

Music is something that can change any persons mind. The problem is whether or not the person listening to the music enjoys the style. We can change the world through everybody uniting under one simple idea of wanting too, but we can't simply rely on the rich and the famous to be the ones to set us aflame. People have to WANT the world to change before somebody like Linkin Park or Pink can even affect us. Yes, once the stone is rolling it's going to gather speed, but it's getting everything started that's the hard part.

Bob Marley is the perfect example of this theory, because people had already started to protest the war by the time he became such an amazing hero to them. He was a voice of the people. He took everything that people were trying to get across and turned it into an amazing art. He appealed to the crowd and, because of this, they all followed what he had to say. That crowd slowly grew because of the power of the music that he was supplying.

People with an idea are nye but a mob until they unite under one banner. Then, and only then, can anything get accomplished.

Music is communication. One of the truest statements that I have ever heard. Music is the ultimate form for people to spread their ideas, their actions, they're experiences, they're dreams, and their souls. Music may not be perfect, but it is definately an art made for communication. Lyrics or not, or understandable or not, the majority if the time, you can understand what the artist is trying to portray. Take a song that has no lyrics in it, and jus tlisten. Think to yourself what they song could be about. Give yourself a message to take from it. Whether it be true to the artist or not, if you can take something from a song, then the artist is communicating with you.

Through this communication, I think that we can initiate change. If we can all unite under a banner, a song, artist, or even just say that we want to change the world, and then we all follow through with what we speak or sing of, then we can change something. One word of peace can change the life of one man. One song of love can change the lives of millions. One idea shared through the world cannot be stopped. All it takes is one belief, one choice, one act.

With enough people under one idea, there is no way that the world could stop change. We could fix everything that people have created as a problem. We could make the world as near to perfect as possible, without demolishing other people.

If we all learned to live with our differences and look at our similarities, we could realize that we're all human, and we all have our own faiths and beliefs. If on artist could portray this, could show for every race, religion, belief, idea, gender, etc., all had something in common, then maybe, just maybe, we could start to share the idea with the world.

Music is basically my life and I know the same can be said for others. Through all the people I've met, the one thing thats been able to connect us is music. Its universal and can be the voice of change.

Really? I mean, i agree with you about politiians failing us, but music? I spent a lot of time in the music industry and I hope that that is not the vehicle used to change the world. Most musicians can't help themselves let alone be the focal point for social change.

Yes its true that many musicians are struggling on a personal level to make a living. But who says you can't help others while helping yourself? Depending on how the artist goes about it, music can and does affect change. Its been used as propaganda in the past for the purpose of promoting war. Take a look at how Hitler used Wagner's music. Can music therefore not be used in the present to bring about peace and change? Music is more powerful than people give it credit for.
