Youth Mental Health on the Net
August 14, 2007 - 01:36 PM

Hi Everyone,
My name is Jen and I am currently doing my PhD in Clinical Psychology. I have begun researching the ways in which the internet has contributed to improving the mental health of youth all over the world (i.e., improved self-esteem, help with disorders, empowerment). It could happen in many different ways, such as through this site, facebook groups, counselling over the net, etc.). This is a very preliminary idea, but if anyone has thoughts or ideas related to this I'd love to hear from you!!
Thanks,
Jen

The internet is no doubt an empowering thing, but it has the potential tp empower in a negative way.

I remember there being a lot of talk while I was in highschool about cyber-bullying. While the internet connects us to people all over the world, it can also disconnect us from the human qualities and global issues that are present on the other end of the wire. Even on a forum created by my friends, we had people who we knew from school acting in ways which they never would to our face.

Without proper guidance, people are able to operate freely inside of a realm that may not promote positive attitudes. It is hard to learn right from wrong when you write the rules yourself.

Access to information is important and powerful and ease to find and use that information is even more so. The internet is a very dark place - it is an archive of all things good and bad.

I think it is interesting how people are able to identify and 'grow' while connected to a soul-less object such as a computer. I don't even know myself what sort of impact it has had on my development spending so much time on the computer throughout my school years. I know my grades definitely suffered and I spent too much time on meaningless activities such as online games (which I still do but they are much more recreational these days). I was often disillusioned as to what was important in the outer world and in my own world.
