Do you think it is proper for the University authorities of a private Tertiary Institution to conduct HIV/AIDS test for graduating students?

Yes,
I do think its right for the university to conduct HIV/AIDS test for students(graduating and newly-admitted).
In more developed countries, you are required to undergo for the HIV/AIDS test for university admission. Its one of the immigration requirements, in order to apply for a student pass in several countries.
Nigeria should not be left out in the fight against the scourge. Even though, there is no cure but once HIV status is known, it becomes easier because one can go for medications that reduce the virual load and keep healthy.
It also creates an awareness of the dreaded virus, forcing people to live better lifestyles.

[b]Why is it necessary to actually get the test if you dont feel like it.Is it necessary to make an introduction of MANDATORY TESTING ,i think this is just a way or rather it makes stigmatisation and discrimination of students to happen within the instituation,i feel that OK fine there should be tests but just due to the fact that someone has been tested and he/she comes out positive dont deny that person the chance to continue with their studies!I have had cases of whereby a student passed so so so well, got a scholarship and as a result of the situation that the person was undergoing she kind of got involved in in soe kind of sexual rampage and got it(HIV/AIDS).She was denied a place at the university.I think that the testing is a good idea but,it NOT necessary to chuck the person out due to their status!

Though, it's a case of a private tertiary institution, HIV test should not be mandatory because it's completely one's right to undergo testing.
Rather, make them aware on HIV and AIDS, let them decide for VCT. It would be nice to have a VCT center within an university/college.

The Convenant University issue is such that has attarcted alot of reactions from differnt angles in Nigeria.
Different groups are calling that the university changes its policy at least in the intrest of these young students who tested positive to HIV and the school has refused to allow them graduate.
This is sad.
I believe this is their private life and it has absolutely nothing to do with the school.
The school also asked that they undergo pregnancy test too.
This is sad.
Very sad.
I am of the opinion that we still have a lot to do in terms of creating awarness on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.

Ah its such a worrying situation to the University in testing the graduating students. This means that if one is identified to be infected will not be awarded the degree or his or her transcipt will be labelled that this person is infected and provide him or her on condition you know his life status. I think there is need to sensitize students of the worrying and deadly disease other than making samples on them while they are graduating.

Uchenna,
You said "In more developed countries, you are required to undergo for the HIV/AIDS test for university admission. Its one of the immigration requirements, in order to apply for a student pass in several countries"
But i have never heard of anyone being descriminated against because of his/her HIV status.
What is the certainity that those who are HIV+ will not be denied their educational hopes because of This ???
I am in support of the tests if it will aid the students to know their status and how to live with it, but on no account should any aplicant be denied admission on the basis of the status !!!

Mallam Ibro,
U have a point, but it is important to note that HIV test should be voluntary and not compulsory, moreover, there should be counseling.

I agree that if the test should stay, they should be voluntary and the school authorities should not penalise anyone student who refuses to take the test.
The status of anyone should not serve as a qualification or disqualification to his or her educational pursuits!!!

My friends,
Lets not be self-sided and air our views and opinions without judging and/or observing the other person's perspective.
Some nations have a much lower HIV infection rate and will not allow you irrespective of whatever reason (education, employment, etc) to increase the likelyhood of the HIV spreading to endermic proportions.
Nevertheless, I would not support the withholding of graduating students educational qualifications, they deserve their certifications and awards which their status has no negative effect on. Probably, a medical practitioner might be relieved of his/her duties due to high probability of infecting others but generally, HIV status does not make an individual to become some sort of sample, "guinea-pig" or example.
We all have to work together because the HIV/AIDS scourge is a global issue. The governments of developing countries should pay more than mere lip-service in the fight against the HIV infection.

Last weekend the Registrar of the University in question explained in a newspaper reply to series of questions that was raised by a concerned Nigerian that the university did not refuse to graduate any student becasue of their status. He further stated that prior to the admission of the students to the private owned university, parents and guardians were asked to sign a form on issues surrounding stuffs like this.
Like the writer rightly responded, the Registrar did not state clearly why the school had to conduct such test.
In a similar development, in a television interview, some parents explained that they were never asked to sign any form to that effect as the school claimed.
The Nigerian Universities Commission (the body responsible for issues affecting universities in Nigeria) also said on Television that they are yet to receive any formal complaint from any parent, in essence they will not be in the position to act on the matter until a complaint is gotten.
We are still watching...

According to the supreme instrument of the land-the Constituion, the screening for HIV is guided by the Fundamental Human Right of the land. Enforcing the screening in question is a violation of the fundamental human right of the persons involved. The rules guiding the operation of National Agency for Control of HIV/AIDS (NACA), stipulates that any test whatsoever on HIV shall be according to the will of the person(s) involved.
Besides, for what purpose is the test? Testing positive does not nullify the rights of the persons involved as acitizen.
In all, HIV/AIDS screening should not be forced.

Really wish the authorities of Covenant University can be on a life interactive forum with members of TIG, sure they have some few things to learn from us. (With all due respect to them)
