You and the law?

A woman dumps a new born baby in a pit and abandoms it to die, but fortunately the child survived and it was rescued.
What do you think should be done to the mother? Should she be granted leniency by the court of law for attempted murder or should she be made to face the full wrath of the law without mercy? What is your opinion on this?
N/B: A number of Young unmarried girls undergo indiscriminate abortions with impunity and there is no pronounced law against abortion but the constitution only outlaws murder.

I definately don't think she should feel the wrath of the law without mercy...
It's hard for a male to understand, but for a woman to just abandon a child, it's not an easy thing to do..not in the slightest. If she did abandon the baby to die, it could possibly be because she knew that the baby would grow up in poverty, or have a poor life.
It definately depends on the circumstance. It's a tough call to make, that's for sure.

I think there should be mercy - she can still face the brunt of the law but with some leniency if there are any factors that led to her doing what she did; i mean the courts to take mitigating factors into account. I think the law should be about solving problems and not just be a penalising tool for wrongs done. If it tries to solve problems more than penalise people for wrongs, then there could be an improvement in society; i.e there could be a decrease in wrongs being committed.

It depends on a the circumstances, like what prompted her to do this, did she want to kill the baby. I think that she should have to face some consequences if she was of sound mind and just did not want the child.

u r right and what shorty said is a fact in law.
the circumstances and motive for committing a crime are important and vital for deciding a case.
however, the mother needs a simple punishment, not necessarily capital punshment, why did not he sougt help of police or law enforcing authorities,.... for resolving the issue. no body is allowed to kill another human being despite any axcuse he could have.

Actually, in regards to abandoned babies, I believe that it is a case-by-case issue. In Malaysia we have them because unmarried mothers would face social stigma that would spillover to the family. We don't disown them or anything, far from it, but there is still strong need for a feminist movement here for some readjustment of the male attitude towards women.
I think that instead of prosecution, rehabilitation is a more effective and sensitive solution. These women, in my experience, are desperate, not heedless. They often beg to care for their own child again after caught.

I think abandoning your baby and getting away with it unscathed is unacceptable. I understand there are certain issues and situations but there are alternatives than leaving your CHILD to die. yes, i'm sure that was a hard decision for the mother to just leave their baby on a doorstep or in a dumpster. but the 9 months of having your child in your uterus gave you no emotional attachment what so ever to this baby?! If you want it to live and prosper, don't just leave it somewhere and run away. Adoption agencies are still around... there are plenty of people that would like a child of their own to raise but physically cannot do so. I'm adopted, and I have had a great life. I wouldn't have had this if my birthmother had chosen abandonment or abortion for me.

i cannot really say anything about this, without knowing the circumstances.
would the baby have grown up in poverty?
was the mother sick?
did the baby have any relations it could be sent to?
you cant say anything without knowing circumstances...

I think that people in india need to realize that women are strong and important too. We are the ones that do the laundry, and clean the house, and everything else. We are Women! With a capital W!!!
and you can tell them i said that.
