Yahoo or Google?

I always used Yahoo just out of habit when in need of a search engine. However, I recently discovered that most people pay for their ranking on Yahoo. Google's search engine results are based on site quality and credibility... the way it should be. (This is so I hear.)
I was trying to search for my own company's site "Global UR" by typing this phrase into Yahoo and it doesn't come up forever. It comes up right away on google. Regardless, which search engine do you prefer and why? Just curious...

Same goes for google as goes for Yahoo. People pay google to have their site show up first. However there are other parameters that Google uses which Yahoo doesn't.

I prefer to use google because it's more user friendly plus the format is clearer to the user. In yahoo, the font that they use is relatively small in size. plus, i find my google seaches are more refined than in yahoo.

Well, I would rather search through Google, because the homepage is strictly a search engine, and there aren't a million links on the page (Yahoo).
BUT, I think Yahoo mail is much better than Gmail. Yahoo's IM service is also much nicer that Google Talk.
Nice thread.

I think I need to clear the air for you here. As far as I know, Google has two major algorithms for ranking websites on their search engine. And none involves payment of any kind; all that is required is for you to be mindful of these algorithms while you are coding for your website, or while you are optimizing for search engines.
The algorithms are as follows:
1) Text Matching: which is a system whereby Google tries to find pages relevant to what the searcher has entered in the search box
2) Pagerank: which is a ranking system of pages that scores a point for your website based on the number of high quality websites that are linked to pages on your website.
With the right tweaks you may have your website ranking first on the search result. I did same for my site and the story today is different from what it used to be some years back. And the interesting thing is that I did not pay a dime.

I use Google, I like the simplicity of it.
As well, I am dedicated to Gmail. It is well designed.
Google is also doing a lot of projects which are making information (such as their Books project) available to the public.

Hi!
For the sake of clarity: yes, all search engines accept advertising. The reliable ones, such as Google and Yahoo, place the paid results in a special box, called AdWords and Sponsor results. You cannot pay to be at the top of the natural search, but only to be in the sponsor box.
I use mainly Google, as said it is more direct while Yahoo has plenty of other options. Said this, if my searches is really important, I check on Google, Yahoo and MSN. Because to have more than one "Point of view" about relevant results is always good.

Alternatively, you can try a meta-search engine, querieng more than one engine at once and merging results together.
Example: http://www.mamma.com/

I always used to use Yahoo! but I switched to Google about a year ago. I use Google now becuase of the user friendliness of the interface and I find that I get a lot more country specific hits than on Yahoo! However when my concience gets the better of me (Google assists the Chinese government in thier censorship) I use Altavista.
