Small Steps to Help Global Warming...
July 14, 2007 - 02:24 PM

Recent years have seen the advocating of small changes that the general population can make to help lessen our impact on the planet and help solve global warming. Recent events have thrown these changes into the spotlight, but only a few have been named, things like changing to CFLs and riding a bike more often. These are great things, but, what I’m wondering is what else can we do? What not-so-commonly-mentioned little changes can we make in our everyday life to lessen our impact on the planet?

Here are Al Gore's top ten suggestions:

1. Change a light bulb to energy saving bulb.
2. Drive less.
3.Recycle more.
4. Check air pressure in your tires.
5. Use less hot water.
6. Avoid products with lots of packaging.
7. Adjust your thermostat 2 degrees up in summer, 2 degrees down in winter.
8. Plant a tree
9. Turn off electric devices which have standby feature.
10. Mention this list to other people!

I guess many of these steps are not relevant to less developed (less energy hog) countries, But they are very relevant to the USA.

I agree with Al Gore and the Movie "An Inconvenient Truth" but what i dont agree with is the whole point about making a difference now. To reverse what we have done over the last 100 years or so we would have to either die off, or stop using water and power alltogether.

Dear Gazby7,

You are right, changes in our energy hog behavior now won't make much difference in the shortterm. But you are just 21 years old with a good 79 years ahead of you. YOU are going to be the one to suffer when the oceans rise, the wells run dry and the temperatures go through the roof! Yes, it is easy to be pessimistic when world population is projected to grow to 9 billion before stabilizing. What are these people going to eat, what energy will be there for them to use? I hope there is an answer. Maybe a re-orientation towards a more agricultural society and away from the growth-addicted, polluting industrialization we have today.

Population growth rates in Europe, Japan and the United States are much lower than in the developing world. Rather than bemoaning this fact, we should embrace it. Let's get some negative population growth in these energy-wasting countries. Maybe old people will have to work longer, economies will have to become more service-oriented, maybe companies will have to pay their scarce workers more. I think there is room for optimism.

So do we just give up and drive that Hummer till the tires catch fire or do we try to mend our global warming ways now? To me, the answer is obvious.

not buying bottled water is another small ways to help stop global warming...because people drink so much bottled water theres more shiiping the water from country to country...but all that exporting uses a lot of oil...some cities are already banning botlled water...and people are happy with the tap water they get.

Just when I think there is no hope for the USA, the American people make a shining example for the world! Yes, why do we (and the Europeans) bottle water and transport it all over the world? Cleaning up our public tap water is a much greater priority. In problem areas, using filters can make the water safer and taste better. The plastic bottles are also a headache and are filling up garbage dumps everywhere. I am glad Americans are putting a stop to this.

Good news- bottled water was just banned from city hall in Boston! It's a small step... but a great one. Will others follow?

The basic thing that we need to do, as a whole world population, is be more aware and think about the consequences of our actions and be more conscious about the earth, the way it works, its history and what each of us all contribute to the planet as a whole. We need education and the will in each of us to make an effort and be more conscious of the situation at hand. I think then, Reduced consumption and the other helping factors would follow...

I propose taht the best way to stop global warming is by conducting a mass suicide by the human race. Man is o evil and nasty that "he" doesnt desreve to be on this planet. If all the global warmest were serious about their convictions they would off themselves....I see no other solution.

I agree with the top ten list, a little change can make a huge difference. Like if everyone in the United States alone would change all their light bulbs to energy saving ones, they could litterally stop Global Warming that easily. Also, it is important to try to recover the harms we have done in the past because if we don't, everything would just get worse.
